GA-P55-USB3 won't power up

First, I'd like to thank everyone here for helping those in need!!!

I was given some computer parts and I'm in the process of assembling a computer.  I have done this many times but not for a few years.

Parts:

GA-P55-USB3 with I5

1 - 4 gig Gskill DDR3 1333

HIS HD 5830

OCZ 600 MXSP

Last time they were used all parts were functioning; here's what's happening:

Place MB on Cardboard & put all components in / on using the case switch - LED's on the MB flash, fan just moves a little and then nothing. 

Pull all components from MB, turn on and the LED's Flash longer & fan stays on longer but only about 1/2 second.  Then it does the same thing after a couple of seconds (Loops).

I have reset the Bios by jumping and removing the battery.

The PC doesn't stay on long enough but I believe it 's an intermittent beep, no pattern.

Disconnected PS from everything, try the paperclip trick and it runs.

Plugged the PS into another MB/CPU and it works.

I have searched these boards and found some symptoms; if this has already been discussed, I apologize!!!

What is your Heat Sink Fan or other hardware for dissipate heat ?

Have you tried just one (1) stick of RAM?
One by One. In each Slot (Bank of Ram) ... maybe he have a problem with this...

Verify if your Heat Sink Fan is properly attached on Cpu.
Not too tight either. Not too loose on one side. Just well balanced.

Just to add to Gloup_Gloup's post there as you haven't built a system in a while there are certain things that are likely to have changed. On modern motherboards there is an extra power connector to be plugged in near the CPU, usually either a 4 or an 8 pin 12v. Also there is an extra power feed for the graphics card probably a 6 and an 8 pin on your card. Make sure that all these power leads are connected or you won't get anywhere.

The other thing to check is that the memory is inserted in DDR3_1 using just one stick for starters.

Hi,

The graphics card that you have requires a PSU of at least 500w, in addition to that you will need to factor in the other components for your system and their power requirements.....a PSU of at least 650w is recommended. Also, as DM has stated testing the memory would also be worth doing.

My Ram is the white ddr3 slot 1 and I only have 1 - 4 gig stick.

I did read through the troubleshooting guide before I posted this thread.

All power connections are hooked up, the PS is 600 watt; all these components have run in a different case recently.

Shouldn't the fans spin up even without ram or graphics???

OK, I tried it again this morning after a good night's sleep; Mother Board on cardboard (on the table), no ram, no Graphics; just the board, cpu & cooler.

The cpu fan spins and the board's LED's come on; both for a duration of 1 second.  This loops every 5 seconds.

Hi,

Have you tried the following....possibly removing all of the components from the MB:

by Dark Mantis Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.                        
                        
Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least one hour before replacing it.                        
                        
Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.                        
                        
You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Optimised BIOS Defaults.                        
                        
Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.                        

Really an extended CMOS clearance......then see if that makes any difference also:

Examine the MB...are there any capcitors that look swollen?

The CPU....bent pins?

Take care where electricity is concerned.....safety first.

I'll try it but last night I disconnected the PS & jumped the cmos + removed the battery for about 20 minutes.

It didn't have any effect.

The fans should spin up and stay running without any ram, hard drive or graphics right? 

This is with the board out of the case after shorting the power switch jumper.

If that's the case then it has to be CPU or main board, right?

It strikes me as odd that with nothing in the board I get the intermitent cpu fan and board LED's coming on and looping but with the ram and video card in; all I get is a twitch from the cpu fan and then nothing.

Hi,

If you have another comaptible CPU which is good then you could try that...to see if that will eliminate the CPU out of the equation.

It could be the MB in which case you could contact Technical Support in the US and raise a support ticket

Take it to a PC store for testing.....though it will cost you a few $'s.

I think it would pay you to try another PSU in place of the one you have there. Make sure that it is a good quality one and of sufficient power preferably on a single 12v rail. Don't use a "no namer" as you can never even be sure of the wattage output let alone anything else.

One more thing, have you installed a speaker/buzzer for the beep codes ? It could save you a load of time.

Unfortunately, I don't have another CPU and I can't afford to buy one.

I do have another brand new OCZ 600 MXSP; tried it with the same results.

I do have a buzzer installed; OK, with the Mother Board on cardboard (on the table), no ram, no Graphics; just the board, cpu & cooler: the cpu fan spins and the board's LED's come on; both for a duration of 1 second.  This loops every 5 seconds.  The buzzer had intermittent beeps but it didn't stay on long enough to hear a pattern.

If all the power connections are made and working then the fans should spin regardless of there being no graphics card or memory. I would however put one stick of memory in the first slot as it will make things easier to faultfind. Can you arrange to try your PSU on a friends machine or your motherboard/CPU on a friends PSU ?

I've tried a new power supply on the Gigabyte with the same results.

I've tried the power supply on a different board & cpu and it worked fine.

I'm thinking the motherboard is fried; unfortunately there aren't many inexpensive LGA 1156 options at newegg.

It should still be under warranty which is three years unless you wired it up to the National Grid or something. It could of course also be the CPU.
