Additional fan not working

Additional fan not working
« on: January 31, 2012, 06:08:02 pm »
Hello everyone. I have a "Cooler Master Silencio 550" case and i decided to install an extra fan. I installed the "Akasa Apache Fan", but when i boot up it doesn't rotate. It just rotates a bit then stop and it goes on like that. I have plugged it into my SYS_FAN 2 connector. Could it have something to do with it being a PWM fan?

Is it plugged into a 4-pin PWM header?

What are your fan settings in BIOS?  ("Silent" vs. "Performance", etc.)

It's plugged into my SYS_FAN 2 connector.

Where can i see my fan settings? I can't seem to find it in the BIOS

How do i know if it's a PWM connector?

Whilst in the BIOS the fan suddenly started rotating though only at 195 RPM. I noticed on the page that i bought it states that it has "PWM automatic speed control". How does this work?

SYS_FAN2 works with speed control. When motherboard temperature is low, it spins at low speed.

Is there a way to make it spin at full speed at all time?

No, I don't think so. You have to plug your fan in PWR_FAN or SYS_FAN1 instead, to work at full speed.

Ok, but they are both 3 pin connectors and my fan is a 4 pin. Is there another way? Or is it possible to connect a 4 pin to a 3 pin?

Yes, you can connect it to a 3-pin connector. You can also connect a 3-pin fan to the 4-pin connector. :)

SYS_Fan2 is always bogus, I don't know why they wont change that!!

It always runs at half voltage (5-7V), so many fans can't even start when using that header, you'll need to use another header as suggested above

Yes,you can connect a 3 pin to a 4 pin header. It only fits one way. Or,

You can use a Molex adapter. Connect your fan to an extra Molex connector from your power supply.

As Lsdmeasap has pointed out SYSFAN_2 only works at half speed/voltage so you are really banging your head against the proverbial brick wall there. I would just use a molex adapter and connect direct to the PSU.

I have this EXACT issue  :o

P67A-UD4-B3.
Akasa Apache Black
Sys_Fan2
Fan spins on boot, 5sec spin, powers down, and twitches non stop all the time, won't spin in any circumstance!

Called Gigabyte tech and they said no problem, RMA the board and we'll sort it..

I thought HMM?! Shouldn't need to be done as this seems like it's an issue with some firmware or voltage going to that header.

I've just rebuilt my system (can be seen in pictures of members computers thread), and i've bought a load of new fans, only to be sadly disappointed that I can't use a SINGLE FAN in my system how I want to use it.

They're all 4 pin connectors, my board has Cpu fan, Pwr fan, Sys fan 1, Sys fan 2, cpu and sys fan 2 are 4 pin, pwr and sys fan 1 are 3 pin, you can't connect a 4pin to a 3pin as it'll spin at full speed constantly which is not what I want, I want it plugged into 4 pin, and to be controlled by the motherboard, but this obviously can't be done??

I'm yet to find a fix to my issue, can't connect cpu fan to a 3 pin connector (can I???) (Noctua NH D14 with dual HS + Fan, using splitter onto cpu fan header to run both fans), can't run any of my fans off the 3 pin headers as they spin at full speed, can't use the only 4 pin either...

Now. Is there a fix to this? Is there a fan I can buy that's SOOOO quiet you can't hear it? I originally went with the Noctua S12B ULN fans but the nice chaps at Scan.co.uk recommended the Akasa Apache Black's which don't come with any screws or ANYTHING. So is there 3 pin fans I can buy that are silent as a dead doormouse? Here's a link I've found useful: http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products/120mmfans then arrange it by DBA.

Can I get slow spinning, high(ish) airflow, quiet fans, to run from my 3 pin headers, or any that will work on my sys fan 2 header? I've got like one day left to return these akasa fan's back to Scan.. So any help ASAP would be brilliant fellas! (I'm clued up on what i've done before, but this is my first gaming rig with loads of fans, so not a clue! Google is my best friend lolz)
