Yes, since you are continuing the troubleshooting I'd go ahead and uninstall Norton, and anything else you think might be holding you back, you can always reinstall later!

.NET updates failing are in a class of their own!!   You'll need to uninstall ALL .NET updates, and then install them in a certain order.
Use this first, .NET Framework cleanup tool
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=121918

Here is the correct order, and direct links for each installer are posted at the page below:
1. .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (this will install the 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2 )
2. .NET Framework 1.1
3. .NET Framework 1.0
4. .NET Framework 4

Back to Norton.   Yes, you'd think disabling or temporary disable would actually disable antivirus apps, but I often find it does not but only appears to do so.  You can test and see if it's being disabled for real or not, try saving this text in a notepad with Norton disabled, if it allows you then it's disabled, if not then you'll know it's running!

Code: [Select]
X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
Even if it is actually being disabled, it might be best to go ahead and uninstall it just to rule it out, you can re-install it later!

Hope you can get this sorted without a clean install!   I know it's often the quickest and easiest route, but I know how you feel wanting to keep the current system up and running, so good luck!

Thanks Rolo been here already too ....... but all valid points ...... Reg Mechanic, Advanced Uninstaller Pro10, CCleaner and Super AntiSpyware all get a work at at least once a week .....
You let these automatically "clean" (read: "destroy") your registry?

" So, this is office updates only that fail correct? "  ..... Predominately correct ..... near on all were 2010 Office update! (x86) ..... but there was 3 or 4 for NET Frame that also would not take ....Fail,fail,fail even when  chosen by them selves.
/facepalm

You need to fix .NET first; there's a .NET removal tool you should run, restart, run Win update and install just .NET.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx
I think that's the one I used.

Well still, that's plenty!   Though maybe with that little amount the chances of anyone actually getting the file are minimal :D

Well enjoy your photo-shoot, and I hope you can sort this out when you have time to jump back into the fire!   Since I don't often venture into this section, be sure to PM me to come and check this thread when you get back to it (Thanks!)

.NET must be installed in a certain way, and windows update tends to mess this up, so I suggest to anyone reading this with .NET issues to please see my previous post on the correct install order.   Just a heads up Rolo, in case you ever come across anyone with .NET or .NET update install issues.

IIRC, that procedure has downloads to install .NET manually (which will still need updated via Win update, to include one released today).

But, yes, I agree with you that a manual install is better when Win update is suspect.

I had .NET get completely borked on my test machine and that removal tool fixed it.

Right!......Unless someone comes back with a definitive answer ..... I'm pulling the plug on this install :D

I have ruled out Every-thing discussed so far ..... don't get me wrong fellas..... I would not have got to here without the valued help by all concerned.

  SUMMARY

Norton 360 version 5 and 6 is not the culprit ....... .NET repairs have had zero impact ..... turning off and clearing the windows update folder ....Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ........

without going into the other 10 or 15, ....it keeps coming back to "Runtime error" ....specifically nvvsvc.exe ...... Sad thing is all my researching leads to " Yup fixed it by reinstalling windows" ...... Grrrrrrreat! ....... thing is this machine ran for near on twelve months before the runtime error started at the login screen 2 to 3 weeks ago.

Oh well! .... what do you guy reckon. :-\

Sorry to hear you lost the battle this time Allan!!

Maybe next round will be yours for the taking! :D

It's too bad we can't do "Repair" Win7 installs like XP, I can't believe they removed that option as it was awesome!

Forgot to ask...  have you received any nasty emails replies back yet :D

Only from my Bank Manager .... Mwa ha-ha-ha :D.....

Is there still no fix for the dreaded Nvidia NVV error ?

Sory Rolo, I forgot to comment on what you mentioned about .NET.  Those single installers and method of install are the best way to avoid issues, once they are installed their corresponding updates can be installed in any order without issue, you just have to get the main versions installed properly first and that's where the single installers come in handy.

Haha, you sent that to your bank manager, for real?  I didn't look for a fix on that error, you said you were moving forward with a clean install.   Would you like me to look around for you?

You have a crumb-trail of issues here!

Did you uninstall, clean re-install your nVidia driver?  (which does require .NET BTW)

As far as the bank manager issue, if you set up remote access for me, I'm sure I can resolve it.

Just out of curiosity have you tried "Clean Boot', & gone through Reg Edit for fragments.

Sometimes software programs don't catch everything.

Hope this helps, if I think of anything else will let you know.

Crumb trail or puzzle pieces .....and yes! .... had to rename the install file to get it to install though, .... another weird crumb

Remote access huh! ........ well if you think it'll help, .....why not!, ..... would you need my bank A/C details too, .....will save you the hassle of invoicing me  :D

yup! .... clean boot ....no effect .......I did check reg edit a couple of times  after  Advanced Uninstaller Pro10 ........ but to be honest, it seems to find all traces on it's second sweep when uninstalling anything.
