Which USB header to use?

Which USB header to use?
« on: February 19, 2012, 01:20:20 pm »
Hi there

Would like to add an internal card reader to my GA-X58A-UD3R but I'm not sure which header to attach the 4 pin USB 2 connector to.

I've identified the USB headers on the mobo but they are 9 pin connectors (1 row of 5 and 1 row of 4)

Am I ok to connect the USB 2 from the reader to the row of 4?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi there,

Do you have an image of the USB Pin assignment of the Card Reader you are wanting to use?

The ones on the motherboard are:
Row of 4 pins
1 - Power 5V
3 - USB DX-
5 - USB DX+
7 - GND
9 - No Pin

Row of 5 pins
2 - Power 5V
4 - USB DY-
6 - USB DY+
8 - GND
10 - NC

Although it might be OK to just connect the device in this manner it is worth making sure the pins in the card reader header are in the same order or you could have an issue.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Thanks for the reply.

Card reader pin assignment matches the mobo row of 4.

I've plugged it in and all seems ok except that SDHC isn't working(other memory card types are working) -  wanted to check I'd connected the card reader correctly to eliminate this as a potential SDHC issue.

All drivers are uptodtae so it's either a Win7 or card reader issue.

Thanks again.

Hi

I would suspect that it is a fault with the card reader itself. Most of them are made in China and are fairly cheaply made, there are many problems with them in one way or another.

I agree with DM on that!   Many of those sellers also sell fake memory sticks too, programmed to appear to be more memory then they actually are!
