I noticed in my manual that each of the round pin sockets for the onboard sound card is designated as a specific channel for 5 (or 6 or 7).1 surround sound.  I have a few extra pair of powered speakers.  Can I just connect them to these ports and have the surround sound?

not really surround sound requires spefic input and output jacks. 3 ports are required for surround sound or optical cable if you have an optical port also which many motherboard come with.

Of course you are more than welcome to try it not sure but it actually might cause more harm than good.
