Gigabyte HD 7970 Windforce Coil Whine!
« on: March 22, 2012, 06:46:09 pm »
Hello everyone, I just got my 7970 card yesterday and finally put together my system, but my card is making a coil whine when playing games. It's not that I don't like the card, it's  splendid, but should I be worried about this noise? I also read online that other people have this same issue not only with this card but with others as well. Please let me know if there is something I should be worried about and if I should send it back for a new one. Thanks

Hi and welcome.

I have not heard of any problems with this card or any others at the moment and so I don't think it is a recurring issue. Are you sure that it is coming from the coils on the card and not from something else like the fan ?

No it's not the fans, I can only hear it when gaming and is under heavy load. Even when running the assessment test in System/Performance Information and Tools, I can hear it whine. There is also a few YouTube clips that show this issue. The thing is I do not know if it's something to be concerned about. Also I did not overclock anything.

If you are correct and it emminates from the coils then it is unlikely to be any more than a nuisence. It may well stop after it has been working for a while without any external help.

hey, thanks for the reply. The thing is it's kind of constant especially in all games that I tried. I will give it a few days and see how it behaves. If anyone has more info I would greatly appreciate it.

You have the option to RMA it of course but your warranty runs for a couple of yearsa yet so there is no real hurry to do anything.

Hey bud, yeah i have a 7950, and i can hear it when its underload during atitool artifact scanner. Its like a high frequency sound and when i change atitools to spin the box it modulates lol. But in all seriousness mines gone back for what i thnk is a voltage issue. I thought i was having driver issues after an upgrade from a 6870. But i kept having issues with crashing after that. So i checked the voltages with GPU-Z and they were well below the 1090mV shown on GPU shark. Good luck mate.
