Problems with ga ma790x ud4p
« on: March 31, 2012, 02:24:28 am »
Hi, I´m having problems with my mobo, I have it since 2009 and not even one single problem, but I´m not sure if my problem is related to it, I love it´s just great and I don´t want to change it for a lower model since I´m in a budget.

The problem is this, about 5 weeks ago my pc entered in power saving mode, the HDD led is "working" and I can´t turn it off with the power button on the tower, the only way is turn off the psu. It happens with firefox more often for some reason and sometimes it doesn´t work at all.

Now I´m using chrome and is more stable but now it restarts randomly in the desktop or during gaming, some days I can play for hours no problem other days 5 minutes and it crashes.

This is my rig, since 2009 no OC at all with cool n quiet enabled, now I only use high performance

AMD 7750 2.7ghz with stock fan
GA-MA790X-UD4P BIOS f9
Kingston Value Ram 4gb DDR2 @800, I used Crucial Ballistix Tracer for 1 year until they died then Crucial Ballistix for 2 years
xfx 4770 blower fan
2 HDD Maxtor and Samsung

I don´t have other parts for tests,  I can change it for an Intel system with 4gb of ram but if the video card is the problem I can´t buy another one my budget is really low, I really need some help with this. Thanks.

Sorry for my english :/

Sounds more like a software conflict than hardware possiably. Reformatt windows and check it then see if it still occurs is the easiest first step for this. I am sure you have used memtest to check memory. Since you didnt say which OS you are using im guessing since you said 2009 that it is vista or xp. You can also clear cmos on the board and see if it helps but i still think it is software conflict as you stated it happens more with different programs.

Have you checked your temps?  Also you didnt mention your PSU and what it is rated on the 12 volt rail or make and model.

My OS is Windows 7 home premium, I cleared the CMOS and changed the battery, I tried memtest 3 times but it always crashes after a few minutes always a random crash so far no errors at least, my PSU is a Cooler Master GX 550w and I used the F2 bios until February when it all started.

I think is hardware related because almost in February I had a crucial ballistix 2GB @800 MHz module, so I used it alone, it crashed while reading my email using Firefox and then with a Kingston low profile module; to my surprise it ran just fine but after 5 minutes the same "working HDD/ energy saving mode" crash again. Now when I use Firefox after some crashes the system just don´t load at all, sometimes it will crash without even show the gigabyte screen or the fans start and restart and restart... without any video signal!

The temps during gaming are: CPU 118 - 124 F°, Mobo: 114 F°, VGA: 149 F°  Approximated.

Hope that helps, thanks :)

Dont like the idea you are powering that with a 550 coolermaster. Do you have another psu that you can try. I cant find a amp rating on that 12v rail but on another 550 they make it is only 16Amp on the 12v rail which isnt near enough.

It´s a single 12v rail with 44amp, the gx series can handle even a car as far as I know

That is not good enough for a car but it is good for your computer a single 44 amp rail is fine with your specs.

What i would do is strip it to just what you need like, mb , cpu, ram 1 stickor 2 if u have to, 1 monitor, video card and 1 hard drive then reformatt it and strart fresh to me that rules out any kind of software conflict.  After that id start looking at hard ware and switch ram to different slot.

I switched the ram already, feels like is more stable using the modules in the red ones and not the yellow ones. By the way I have two HDD one (OS) with 16mb of cache and the other one with 32, I should install it in the hard dirve with 32mb right?

Yes that would be the better choice.

I tried but it just restarted in the middle of the language screen, so now it´s open with no side panels at all cause it was quite warm inside (I´m from Peru so we are at 77 F). After a few seconds I heard a little buzz coming from the PSU, I heard that a year before but nothing happens so far.

After that I tested them ram and a low profile module seems to be the problem after almost one hour the machine is working just fine and I gonna try some games but with windows 7 64bits and only GB I don´t think it will run smooth but maybe the upgrade to an Intel system is the best choice, I don´t know.

By the way the mobo I´m looking for only has VGA and my display uses DVI, if I get the VGA cable, I can use the DVI adapter but since VGA is analog it will work with the digital DVI from my display? I have a LG W2053TQ

Thanks
