GA-X58A-UD3R Rev2.0 New set up: I want to use SSD and Raptors

Hello,

I am going to rebuild my system due to a hard drive failure. I would like to know if there is a problem mixing and SSD drive with my velociraptors?
I am planning on using the SSD just for the OS and a few other programs and the Velociraptors for my flight simulator and other games.
I want to make sure I take full advantage of my Corsair Force 3 120 GB SATA 3 SATA 6.0 Gb-s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive CSSD-F120GB3-BK.
Thanks in advance.

Sincerely

Edgar

Hi

There is no reason why you shouldn't use both your SSD and the magnetic drives in the one system however yopu wont' be able to get your SSD to work at SATA3 speeds. The fastest port controller on your motherboard is the Intel ICH10R southbridge. I would suggest using SATA2_0 for the SSD and then SATA2_1 and 2 for the Velociraptors. Are you planning to run them as a RAID array ? If you are don't forget to set the controller to RAID in the BIOS before you start and then the SSD will automitically run in AHCI mode.

Hello Mantis,

Thank you for your replay.  I am not running a raid since my drives are 74 Gb and 300 Gb, my plan is to get all my Games + user documents to run in the 74Gb raptor and my Flight simulator on the 300 Gb velociraptor. I also have 2 optical drives with SATA connections should all these be pluged to the intel controler? I would like to use a 2Tb seagate drive as storage and back up, What ports should I use for it? if all the other ones are taken since the marvell controller does not work. Is there a coflict if I use the 2 Gigabite Sata ports at the same time as the intel ports?

Thank you

Edgar

Hi,

This MB is supposed to support SATA3 6GB/s with Marvell 8128 right? So if we plug the Corsair Force 3 or Crucial M4 (mine) on SATA3_6 or SATA3_7 it should be fine ?

Thanks,

I would advisew you to put your faster drives including the velos on the Intel ports, the optical drives on the Marvel ports and the backup Seagate on the GSATA port. The Marvell will be fine for the optrical drives or SATA2 drives etc.

No you did understand me correctly. The Marvell might have been supposed to support SATA3 but it never lived up to expectations. Lots of drivers and firmware fixes were tried but to no avail. The Intel ICH10R southbridge chip is actually the fastest on the board.
