GA970A DS3 memory issue
« on: July 14, 2012, 02:27:28 pm »
Just built and booted fine with 2x2GB AMD/Patriot perfomance ram, , tried in single and dual channel and fine either way.
Now have Win 7 so thought to try another set of ram, 4pcs @2Gb, all bought together as matched. This is unbranded.
Would not boot with all four slots occupied. Tried with one pair and boots with a pair in any slot any confuration, any two of the four, so each is individually OK.
Is this down to
A      the AMD controller?
B      un named so probably unsupported memory? ( although each individual stick runs fine )
C      me not setting up anything at all re timings, voltage etc, everything left as default.

All of the sticks are DDR3  rated 1333 and all the sticks are reading at 666 ( as I said, no tweaking done) both AMD and the others.

Using the AMD now, but hesitant to get another pair in case 4 of them freeze it up as well.
Any clues, suggestions welcome.

edit: Sorry, the board is a DS3 not a UD3!

Hi there,

first thing I would check is your BIOS. Are you running the latest version for your motherboard?
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

It did have an early BIOS, which would not recognise a 955BE and failed to even post. Now has revision 4, which is the CPU BOIS upgrade.

There is some other problem!!  In the GA_970A-UD3 motherrboard  ALL Phenon II chips EXCEPT the 960T and the 980 are recognized by the first
 shipped BIOS F1. The 960T and 980 need F4 which is NOT the latest BIOS.   F5 ( 3/29/12 ) and F6 ( 5/30/12 ) are more current and I have used ALL
6 BIOS in my three 970 boards and haven't had a problem with any memory, no matter what BIOS.The chances are your problem is the memory.

Sorry, just realised it's 970A DS3 not a UD3!
It's on the latest BIOS for this model, F3.
