M68MT-S2 + HIS 5830 no video
« on: July 21, 2012, 09:27:42 pm »
Hello All!

I currently have a new build:

AMD FX-4100 3.6GHz Quad-Core CPU
Gigabyte M68MT-S2 Motherboard
8GB DDR3 1333 (2 x 4GB) Memory w/ CL9 Timings
500GB SATA III 6.0Gb/s 7200RPM Hard Drive
AMD 6670 1GB DDR3 PCI-e Video Card
Thermaltake Smart Series 850 PS

I'm trying to replace the existing 6670 (works fine) with an HIS HD 5830 graphics card; I don't get any display.

Both the exsisting cards are PCIe 2.1 x16; the 6670 has DDR3 Vid Ram & the 5830 has DDR5.

Could the video ram type be the problem?

When I install the 5830 I don't get any display unless I unplug the 5830 & plug the cable into the integrated video.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and for any assistance you could provide!!!!

First check you have the latest bios for your mobo.
This post reminds me of the problems I had getting a 5770 running on my old M56S-S3, as an upgrade from a 8600GS. After chatting with gigabyte I was supplied with a beta bios to get it working (flippin nvidia chipsets). I hope you're not having a similar problem, tho it looks like you may be.

as the 5000 series card is older than the 6000 series i would make sure you had it set in bios to use the pci-e slot and if it still doesnt work i would suspect the card. The ram shouldnt have anything to do with it.

ATI 5xxx series have ,depending on the VGA BIOS used ,issues with some PCI 1.x motherboards and if i am not mistaking that nvidia chipset on the motherboard  is not PCI-E 2.0 compatible ,what the video card BIOS may be expecting.Issues were observed with the first batch of ATI 57xx seres though.
A proper VGA BIOS should fix this if the card is healthy.

Get that video card VGA BIOS updated with latest BIOS version available ,on another working system  ,and if this doesn t help then upgrade the motherboard. The power supply seems to be beefy enough.

I would call/e-mail HIS support about this.

Hey Guys!!!!

Thanks for your replies!

After opening up the case again this morning; I just discovered that the card wasn't seated properly.

The card is a double slot; there's a capacitor next to the pcie slot; the bottom of the card hits it stopping the card from being fully seated.

Thanks again!
