Help Installing more RAM on a GA-870A-UD3
« on: September 26, 2012, 07:17:13 pm »
Hello,

I currently have the GA-870A-UD3 as my motherboard, installed with 2x2GB DDR3 PC3-12800 set up to dual channel, I cant remember the make/model of the RAM.

I was looking to upgrade by installing another 4GB in the other 2 slots I have. I know that this RAM has to be DDR3 but other than that, do I have to make sure anything else is the same? Does speed/make/model or anything have to be the same as my exsisting RAM? Or should I just go and get a 4 stick kit?

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

with RAM it is always better to buy a complete kit of matched sticks as it is less likely to cause problems than adding to existing modules.
I would recommend buying a new kit and keeping the current set as spares.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

It s not a good idea to mix RAM types /brands.
If they are not a matched kit of 4 you may have stability issues.

I would advice you to sell what you have and go for a dual channel kit with 2 memory modules.

If you are using a x64 OS ,a dual channel kit of 8Gigs (2X4) should be enough. If it s a Phenom 2 CPU buy no more than a 1600Mhz  DDR 3 speed kit.
If you are doing video editing ,encoding or other similar tasks  get a 16 Gb kit.
If you are using a Bulldozer/FX CPU get a 1866Mhz DDR 3  kit.
Over & Out !

AMD FX (APU-s included) users should install - KB2645594 & KB2646060 under Windows 7

1.ASUS Sabertooth 990FX 2.0 + FX 6300 + H60
2.MSI A88X-G41 PC Mate + A8 5600K + Hyper TX 2
3.Gigabyte F2A75-D3H + A4 5300
4.ASUS AM1M-A + Athlon 5150
