GA7ZXR and Athlon XP 2600+
« on: September 27, 2012, 08:34:03 pm »
Here's a question. Let's see what answers are out there:

Is it possible to put an Athlon XP 2600+ CPU on an old GA7ZXR mobo?

According to the manual the GA7ZXR does allow 1.65V but 12.5 x 133 is only 1662MHz whereas the 2600+ runs at 1917Mhz @ 333 bus speed.

I am asking because it has come to my attention that my sisters system is only 700Mhz T'bird and I have a 2600+ kicking around.

Is it worth the hassle of trying to manually set up the mobo to use the 2600+?

(I bet after all this typing I will get a series of one word answers  ;D .)

Unfortunately if the board is the one i am seeing ( http://ro.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=1373#sp ) then no ,the board will not support 333Mhz bus (166Mhz x2) FSB because it s a KT 133 chipset based. It takes 266Mhz (133 X 2)  max

I had in those times a KT 333 based motherboard (MSI KT 3 Ultra2) that was able to run FSB 166Mhz with a BIOS update ,the proper chipset for Barton CPU-s being the KT 400 and KT 600 ones.I remember the funny thing that my Barton 2600 + was detected as 2500+ :)

If i am not mistaking Asus was able to run Barton" improperly" with 333 mhz FSB ,but on KT 266 boards ,the KT 133 couldnt do it.

To bad VIA went away they were doing nice chipsets ,i loved that system ,used it as secondary ,web-surfing mostly, till 2010 and then sold it.

Maybe you should use a Throubred 2400/2600+ (FSB 133 X 2 ) instead , if you find one and the VRM is able to feed it..

The chipset simply doesnt allow it ,also the RAM speed is limited in relation to the FSB.

The board will not boot or ignore your settings if you manually set it .

A 266mhz bus CPU with a 1,9 Ghz clock will beat performance wise your actual cpu forced at 266mhz bus with the same 1,9 Ghz speed.

PS: More words to say NO :)

It seems that last night i ve forgot to take a look on the CPU support list :)
This is the list ,Thoroughbred is also not supported ,you need a better/newer motherboard to use that CPU , a Nforce 2 based one would be the best as it features dual  channel memory support  (:
A friend of mine is still running a Gigabyte GA-7N400-L with a Barton CPU and a AGP GeForce 7600 video card ,the capacitors on the board are still healthy.

Thank you for this info.

I had seen a list similar to the one you posted (but without the ok and n/a) and I had hoped that it might work at half speed what with 133 being exactly half of 266. I guess I already knew the answer but I didn't realise the reason why (chipsets and all that).

If I can't easily and cheaply find a suitable 1400 cpu I won't bother.

Thanks again for your efforts.

You are welcome!
There was no effort , i just loved those AMD platforms ,you could choose when building a system from VIA  ,Nvidia ,ULI or  SiS  chipset based boards ,AMD fans were not forced to use the the same chipsets over and  over with a different CPU socket  :)
I would search for a motherboard in your place ,check the PM :)
