5870 2gb dying...

5870 2gb dying...
« on: October 05, 2012, 02:56:02 am »
I think my 5870 2gb is dying or dead.  The VGA led on my asus crosshair iv is staying red.  I can't get a bios post.  This started about 2 days ago, I would play some black ops for an hour or so, and then my screen would freeze and lock up the pc.  Upon reboot the led would stay red, I would then reboot again and it would fire up to windows as if nothing happened.  Wandering if the average lifespan of this particular card is 2 years.  It's  never been over clocked.   Any help would be great, I'm gonna get a spare card and try it out tomorrow.

Steps completed:

  Cleared and jumped CMOS
  Reseated power connections
  Reseated card ( all 4 pci-e lanes)
  Disassembled card re-applied thermal paste
Disconnected all components and ran bare minimum
  Swapped out mini-display port adapters
  Submerged card in battery acid
I've tried everything under the son, with no luck.

Hi and welcome.

I am afraid we don't cover Asus motherboards and I would hazzard a guess that your faultfinding step of "Submerged card in battery acid" probably didn't do much for the GPU either.

Seriously I don't know what the red LED on your motherboard means so maybe iot would be better to head over to their forums to find help. If you want to stay here then a good first step would be to list all your hardware so we have more idea of what is involved.

On the face of it I would say that heat is probably the underlying cause.

I think he already got in touch with the so called A.us forums and support ,that is why he came here :)

chaz69allen1 ,is your video card made by Gigabyte ?!

You may need to check your power supply as well.
Having in mind that the video card is not old it would have been better to just RMA it.I think you ve already lost the warranty for it  ,judging from what you ve done till now.

Hello all,  I stayed up last night around 3:am trying to troubleshoot any possible way to resolve the issue.  The card is well outdated for an RMA, But i broke down and purchased a new card this afternoon, as soon as i popped it in it fired up like nothing ever happened.  I believe my Gigabyte 5870 2gb was just stressed or not the best build when it was born.  My idle temps were always around 55*.  They  were 75* in game (CoD:Black ops).  I know those temps are a bit high, but maybe thats why it died after 2 years.  this new card idles at 34* and on load 45*.  I do own another Gigabyte card , so i might need assistance in the future.  Thank you Gents

  Solved!!

Glad you got it fixed.
I doubt CoD:Black ops killed it.
