ph67-ud-b3 terrible whine when c3/c6 enabled
« on: March 09, 2011, 01:39:49 am »
I waited for a long time for the b3 motherboard to avoid any hassle with returns then the gigabyte ph67-ud-b3 today it came. ironically....
I boot up for first time and soon as it gets to windows loading I hear a really bad whine, I took out any fans and located it to either the CPU plate or coils around that area.

Further testing I found it doesn't do it under windows xp, it does do it on windows boot dvd/recovery and no hardware or PSU changes it. It changes depending on CPU load (worst when idle) and it does it no matter what power options I use in windows 7.
The only thing I've found that fixed the noise was 'c3/c6 state support' in BIOS which was advised in alot of other threads with similar problems. This however comes at unacceptable draw backs of increased power usage and no TurboBoost on my i5-2500k!

I found a post here: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php?topic=3877.0 where a BIOS update corrected it. However there seems to be no BIOS updates for mine.
Do you have any suggestions or info before I have to RMA?

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

Of course these boards are very new to the marketplace and so not many instances of them exist as yet. Even so I have not heard of any other motherboards in this range that have this fault.

Does it still make the noise if EIST is disabled ?

I would PM runn3R our Gigabyte Forum Administrator as I am sure he would be interested in this board and can tell you the best way to continue.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I tried disabling EIST, and EIST + c1e but it made no difference while c3/c6 was enabled.
I did however notice the noise reduced when I unplugged USB devices. But still audible.

I have the exact same problem with my P67A-UD5 w/2600k. Running with Turbo Boost off because of it.   :(

I would advise you to do the same then paincakes. It also wouldn't hurt to contact GGTS so they know of the problem.

Any ideas why the noise would dim when I unplug all the USB and PS/2 ?

The only reason I can think of would be crosstalk. Were the USB devices connected to the rear motherboard connectors or the front of the machine or even via a hub?

As far as I understand it they have the problem all the time when C3,C6 is enabled. I take it the rest of the BIOS settings are set to Optimal.

I have the original board and I can't make any noises come out of it by adjusting the BIOS power saver settings.

That surprises me, your sure you're not tone deaf, working for Gigabyte, got some loud fan migrating the noise or not using windows 7. I would bet money on it as I'm sure they all do it.

Are you trying to say all UD5s make that noise because if so you are dreadfully mistaken. My UD5 (original board) is quiet as a mouse that has had a laryngectomy!

Many times this is actually caused by various power supplies.

I do know what the noise sounds like, and have heard it on a GIGABYTE board at a friends, but have never heard it on any of my multiple handfuls of boards all using only 1-3 different power supplies.   I did test my friends PSU on two of my boards, and then the noise could be heard, so more often than anyone wants to hear, the PSU is the main cause of this issue.

Yes I agree as with the older X58A-UD3 boards it was down to a combination of board and power supply but most motherboard/PSU combinations were perfectly silent.
