Issue with GA-M56S-S3 PCIe x1 slots
« on: August 07, 2013, 08:51:40 pm »
Greetings

Im having an issue with the mentioned above mobo, ive tried everything I could think of and the damn x1 slot refuses to start working. I have read pretty much everything I could find on the net on the matter, flashed the bios and such, but I just cant beat it.

Dunno if its relevant or not, but I am trying to start  HD 5870-s on the two x1 slots, but I cant fire up even one of them. I have a single 5870 on the x16 slot (which is working fine btw) and I am using PCIe razers/extenders for the other two.

I am most certain that the problem is not in any of the other parts, as I have tested them separately on other configurations.

If any of you guise has an idea as to what the reason might be, id test it right away. Im desperate enough to try anything that makes sense.

P.S. Forgot to mention, when I turn on the mobo, the GPU i have connected to the x1 slot seems to be drawing power from the motherboard, the fans start working and so on, still the GPU is unresponsive.

Thanks a lot for your time.

First they wont run on pcix1 slotsa without some modding.
Modified flexible PCIe extenders: allows down-plugging PCIe x16 video cards into x1 connectors, enables running off an inexpensive motherboard, gives freedom to arrange the cards to optimize airflow and cooling (max GPU temps 85-90 C at 25 C ambient temp).

So you need to get the adapter and file down the end of it for it to work. You will still lose speed of card though and it is not supported by gigabyte tech support. You might email them and see if they have an approved method.

Hey,
Thanks for the reply.
I am using extenders/risers as I mentioned in my first post.
Why is this not supported? Arent PCI-e slots designed to be back-and-forth compatible? And I am not only talking about version and speed.
