Troubles updating BIOS - GA-990XA-UD3 rev. 1.1
« on: December 13, 2012, 11:24:25 pm »
Hey everyone.

So I just tried to update my BIOS on my GA-990XA-UD3 rev. 1.1 from F9 to F13. Trying to start up afterwards would result in a bluescreen which popped up for half a second then disappeared leaving my computer to reboot. I figured it might've been too big of a jump in updates, so I downgraded back to F9 and then installed back up to F13 1 update by 1, I tried starting up inbetween each and every update, but the same issue would occur.

Basically, now my computer won't start up no matter what version of BIOS I have installed and I have no idea what to do, other than re-installing windows, but I have no idea if that would help at all. I would love to fix this without re-installing windows, though, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 rev. 1.1
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 680
Processor: AMD FX-8150 8x3,6 GHZ
RAM: Kingston dual channel 16GB
HDD: 1 TB seagate (forgot which model)

First take ur cmos battery out for an hour. When you flashed it back to f9 did it work or have the same symptoms?

It had the exact same symptoms when I flashed it back to F9.

I'll try taking out the battery.

Sounds like it loaded a corrupt bios. Try the battery if nothing else the back up bios should kick in dont know why it hasnt. Maybe there is always the possiability that the bios flas was corrupt and ruined the bios chip in which case you will need to rma the board.

Downloaded all the BIOS update files from Gigabytes website.

Not sure if I know what you mean by "RMA'ing", care to elaborate?

Worst case scenario, shouldn't a re-install of windows solve the issue?

Return Material Authorization is what rma is. You stated that after flash it doesnt load windows at all but blue screens. If it doesnt load bios but bluescreens then you will not be able to reload windows until you get past the bios. The battery trick might help sometime if you leave it out from an hour to 8 hours with computer unplugged it will try to load failsafe from bios backup chip when you start.

If it loads bios and then bluescreens before it loads windows you still have a problem but if it bluescreens after windows loads then you might be able to reload windows and get past it. Again if it bluescreens before bios loads re-installing windows wont happen because it will blue screen before you can load windows off of disk.

I put the battery back in, same issue is still occuring. When I started the computer it wanted me to select what profile I wanted to start up on, "Last known good" being the only option - didn't make a difference.

I booted up my windows disc, no issue whatsoever on the install screen, tempted to try and re-install it - been googling around for a while, seemed to do the trick for people who had no other option.

I wasn't sure how to put it. When I start up the computer, it gets to the "starting windows" screen, and bluescreens shortly after.

I'll try reformatting tomorrow, and get back to you here when I know whether it's working or not.

So far - thanks a lot for the help autotech, I greatly appreciate it.

if you hit F8 when starting then got into safe mode you can try system restore to go back a day or two it usually works for me.

I've tried starting in safe mode, also results in a bluescreen.

A simple re-install of windows did the trick.

Thanks a lot for the help, once again, autotech. :)
