Unfortunate Startup/Boot Problem with GA-970a-ud3
« on: February 10, 2013, 02:29:53 pm »
Hello; I am running the above motherboard with 32 GB RAM, booting from an older SATA II WD VelociRaptor powered by a corsair AX 750. When I startup I usually have a WD Mybook, scanner, and usb sound card hooked up in addition to my mouse and G15.

Here is my problem: from a cold restart (powerstrip cut) the computer does not even show the Gigabyte Bios Graphic - just a black screen; I am forced to hard shut down the computer and then restart. Sometimes this happens in succession; but usually I can get into windows just fine. Occasionally windows startup itself hangs or BSODs. Eventually I can get into windows just fine without any other incident. I can restart the computer just fine as long as it hasnt been too long since the computer was last powered up.

I have updated by backup BIOS (Alt-F12 trick) and run a few stress tests although not specifically the memtest86. I dont think RAM is the problem since I can run in windows just fine for as long as needed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Remove a part of the RAM amount ,keep the USB devices disconnected and connect them when in Windows/OS and try with some other power supply.
Why are you using a 750 W PSU ,any Crossfire/SLI present  ?!
Power Supplyes  behave strange when the load is to low.

I am starting to get BSODs in windows as well. Could happen any minute now... I am running a Phenom II x6 and GEForce GTX 560 along with a secondary hard drive sometimes up to 4 hard drives.

This PSU was used with an even lower power setup before, so I dont know if thats really the issue.

What version is the board ?!

You will have to use a barebone set-up configuration to isolate the problem.

Looks like RAM-CPU problem.

Swap components one by one and see what happens.

rev 1.2; I have run intel burn a few times and no CPU errors and also memtest86 came back ok too.. I am thinking its either the mobo or PSU - I will switch down to one DIMM but I doubt that will help

it was the motherboard; took it back to the store and got an asus instead .. too bad the gigabyte was better built and had a bit more features but cant argue with the new UEFI

I m afraid u didnt read thread. Our friend said that he had to replace 970A UD3 because of a problem, but then he didnt get again 970A UD3 but an Asus, which "has less features".
