GA-X58-USB3 and an SSD
« on: February 12, 2013, 10:39:36 pm »
Hi all,
I want to upgrade my system and install windows 7 64bit Pro so i can utilize all of my 24gig of DDR3.
So i want to get a really good SSD around 250gig in size or bigger, i hear the OCZ Vector or Samsung 850 pro's are the ones to get ?
Thing is i am unsure of what type to get for my board. I am looking at these so if you can advice i would be most grateful :P

OCZ Vector 256GB

I guess what i need to know is if these are compatible with my board..
Some new boards have a designated white sata socket but all mine are blue so i wondered
If there was a limit to transfer speed meaning buying a top end ssd would be a waste due to
The limits of an old board.... Or will the two ssd's mentioned work fine ?

Look at the OCZ Revo drive 3 board and forget sata its a PCIE Card and runs off the PCIE buss if you have it free of course.
if you want fast then you will not believe this, it comes in 240Gb size
I have just installed in  G1 Sniper M3 MB it was originally bought  for my X58 ud3r MB nut I decided to just go for a new MB cpu & water cooled system.

That is a nice drive  :P but its a little pricey lol, what i could just do to clarify is if the OCZ or Samsung drive i suggested would be compatible with my board please ? or because of the age of the MB what is the best SSD via sata i can get ? to be honest the PCIe thing does look tempting lol

Just be careful of the OCZ drives. Some of them are just made for cache memory. If you buy sata 3 SSD it will be backwards compatible.

Here is a link so you can tweak them. This was mostly for the older ones.

That OCZ that you have up there should be fine.

Thanks dmdilks thats a good heads up.
So if i am working on the fact that i will be using an SSD on backward compatility settings surely that makes the sata 3 SSD only
perform as good as my MB's sata rate ?
so...
Is getting a sata3  6gb/s a waste if cash ? would i be better getting a lower end SSD that will still perform as good as the MB allows ?

Am i making sense lol

It is safe to buy that one because down the road you will be updating your MB sometime in the near future.

You will really not going to see that much of a performance drop. Looking at both drives the Samsung would be the better drive.

I get all my stuff from newegg and the samsung has a better rating. Plus try and fine a cable that doesn't have any clips on them.

In all the SSD I have own most of them the cable with the clips on them don't stay clip in. You can buy a sata 3 cable without clips.
