GA-990XA-UD3 Blue Screen Repeatable

GA-990XA-UD3 Blue Screen Repeatable
« on: March 12, 2013, 12:21:18 am »
I've had the GA-990XA-UD3 board since June 2112. I've fought blue screen errors with windows 7 64bit and it always seems to be erratic. Fine for weeks then 3 or 4 in a days time. I have finally found what is causing the problem. I do a lot of microchip programming and those chips at times are programmed to send information constantly back to the computer via usb. This is usually in the form of small packets of 30 bytes or so once a second, but that can vary. If those packets are not processed by software and I assume the receive buffer on the GA-990XA-UD3 fills up I get a blue screen (memory management). I have latest bios and drivers installed, Windows 7 64bit. This error can easily be repeated and the time it takes to Blue Screen is directly related to the data transmitted into the pc via usb.

Any one have a suggestion?
thanks
jim

What CPU is installed?
What is the part number of the memory that is installed?
After installing the latest BIOS, have you made any changes to the BIOS option settings from the default settings?
What is the board Revision number?
1) GA-Z97X-Gaming 7, G3258,
2) GA-990FXA-UD3 Rev. 1.1, FX-8350
3) GA-AM1M-S2P, Sempron 3850 Kabini

The memory should not be run on Auto settings for longer than it takes to enter the memory manufacturers recommended settings. Assuming you have the memory in the recommended slots, I see that the memory should be run at 1600Mhz and Timing 9-9-9-24.

To set memory to 1600MHz:

Select the MB Intelligent Tweaker Menu in BIOS:
Go to the Set Memory Clock setting and change it from Auto to Manual.
Set Memory Clock to X8.00

Next, go to the DDR3 Timing Items setting and change it from Auto to Manual.
Set 1T/2T Command Timing to 2T

Set CAS# latency to 9
Set RAS to CAS R/W Delay to 9
Set Row Precharge Time to 9
Set Minimum RAS Active Time to 24

These are just the first four numbers, others on Auto are okay.
DCT's Mode should be set to Unganged.

Save and exit the BIOS.
Information on these settings is also found in the downloadable manual. That should be a huge improvement.
1) GA-Z97X-Gaming 7, G3258,
2) GA-990FXA-UD3 Rev. 1.1, FX-8350
3) GA-AM1M-S2P, Sempron 3850 Kabini
