GA-990FXA-UD3 settings for 2400/2166 memory
« on: April 15, 2013, 05:37:08 pm »
Hi,

I wonder if someone can help me with my memory setting please, I have 4 of the following sticks with an FX-8350

http://www.kingston.com/datasheets/KHX24C11X3K4_16X.pdf

I've tried the settings given and also the ones reported by cpu-z though these differ to the published settings, (11-13-13 in cpu-z 11-14-14)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Scoot

This is XMP ram hence just select to read from profile1 (no manual settings required) and it should be fine

Thanks for the reply. The sticks have two xmp profiles 2400/2166

Profile1 causes an error message when booting.
Profile2 will only boot with one stick.

Any ideas? Could it be compatibility?

Thanks,

Scott

Do you have the latest sys bios installed? FC for rev 3.0 boards
I read this board can only do DDR2000 max (1866)

this probably explains your problem... I am no expert :)

my HyperX ram is doing (DDR1600) fine here

The rev is 1.2 and your right it only goes to 2000 according to specs page, weird it's got e.o.c.p. profile to 2400 though? Latest bios is installed.

So, if the memory has 3 profiles jedec(1333) and the two xmp profiles can I run it at 1600 or am I stuck at 1333?

Thanks,

Scott

You should be able to run any profile up to DDR2000 (1866) with your ram - you're not limited to 1333

Alas none of the profiles boot :( double checked bios and didn't have latest (could have swore I did when I first built) but still not working.

Might try beta bios / run some memory tests to see if it's faulty?

Thanks,

Scott

Tried FFA beta bios, resetting CMOS etc and still no dice

Thanks,

The CPU supports officially 1866 Mhz max.
The usage of higher RAM speeds depends on many factors and Gigabyte will most probably make sure 1866Mhz works as per specifications.
Anything over 1866Mhz is practically overclocking.
You have 3 factors involved :the CPU IMC the RAM and the motherboard.

agreed, but I can't even get it to work at 1866 :( but then again the memory profiles only support 1333/2133/2400

Been looking at the overclocking as you are correct with regards to speeds, I'm thinking this is something to do with cpu voltage but until I get decent fan I'm not even going there and even if I do it will be tested in the lowest settings possible to get ram speed.

However it is still strange that with one stick it boots?

Thanks,

Scott

If I remember correctly, speeds above 1600MHz are only officially supported by AMD with one stick of RAM per channel, with these CPU's. Check here: http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/processors/amdfx/Pages/amdfx-model-number-comparison.aspx

Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

If this is a new board I wonder why you only got a rev 1.2 since 3.0 is on the market since October last year.

I would go for 1866 ram since your board can't handle higher xmp profiles. Talk to Kingston or, even easier, swap for 1866 ram.. problem fixed. Keep everything on Auto in the bios.

It seems that apparently the problem is the memory kit.
Get a kit that was tested to work with AMD CPU-s ,research the web regarding users experience.
Some memory kits are meant to be installed on Intel CPU-s ,there are sub-timings that change everything regarding compatibility.
tRFC values may indicate better compatibility with AMD.

If 2 sticks are used proper memory should work. There are reports of 2000+ Mhz memory kits that run on FX 8350 CPU-s ,but it s overclocking for the IMC .
The profile should not be used ,it should just work when you set the frequency manually.

Also make sure that on auto-detection ,with profiles or not, the Command Rate stays at 2 T.
The profiles also shown me many times strange/abnormal primary timings.

Furthermore on AMD boards i ve had most issues with Kingston memory.Corsair and Geil could be good choices.

I am using Kingston HyperX ram myself in my AMD box and it's running flawlessly all provided you keep the bios timing settings on Auto and do not push harder manual settings.

I have never got the specified speed for the kit with Kingston kits i ve used on Phenom 2 CPU-s.
They were reaching the stated speed only with one stick installed :)
Maybe i ve had bad luck :)
