GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UP5 TH - 2560x1600 display issue
« on: April 23, 2013, 01:46:56 am »
How do you do,

I have been using the GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UP5 TH for a while with THREE displays with no problems:
1) 1920x1200 (via miniDP)
2) 1600x1200 (via miniDP)
3) 1600x1200 (via VGA)

However, I recently upgraded my 1920x1200 monitor to a 2560x1600 monitor (Dell U3014), and problems started right away: The main monitor (2560x1600) would work for about a minute and then show that its gets no input from the computer and would turn to sleep. It would do this on and off (flicker) for a few minutes, until the monitor would finally totally shut down within about 3-4 minutes.

Troubleshooting:
- I tried a different display port cable, and that did not make a difference.
- If I disabled a single 1600x1200 monitor, the main monitor would still flicker, but less often (every 2 minutes or so).
- If I disabled both 1600x1200 monitors, and leave ONLY the 2560x1600, it runs completely fine! (Hence it is not the monitor).
- If I lower the resolution of the Dell from 2560x1600 to 1920x1080, all three monitors run simultaneously without a problem.

As it does not seem to be the monitor or the cable, I am left with the motherboard (which has built in video).

Please help!!??

Here is my system:
- Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UP5 TH
- Memory: 16GB DDR3
- CPU: Intel i7-3770
- Power Supply: Seasonic SS-560KM
- Video: Using the motherboard built-in video

You could try the 13a Beta BIOS from TweakTown here: http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/28441-gigabyte-latest-beta-bios.html

I have been using this BIOS for sometime and it is stable but I can't say if it will help with monitor resolution as my monitors don't use the same as yours.

Have you checked to see if there are any newer Intel Graphic Drivers than the ones you are using?

I upgraded the BIOS to F13a.
I upgraded the Intel 4000 graphics drivers to 2013/03/19.

These had no impact.

Another very interesting observation:
- If the screen is static, it runs fine.
- When I try to use it (move windows, browsers etc...) that's when the video signal is lost. Running a video triggers it instantly.
- Disabling the two other monitors prevents the issue completely.
- Disabling one other monitor reduces the issue.

It's almost as something overheats or runs out of resources, which causes a loss of signal.

I also attached a voltage/temperature snap shot while running a video (the monitor kept flickering off).

Also, I tried the main monitor with both thunderbolt (miniDP) ports, it made no difference.

The best advice I can offer now is that you contact GTS here: http://ggts.gigabyte.com/tech.asp?ClassID=2&Country=Canada&SourceWeb=B2C and see if they can explain why this is happening.

Maybe it is the problem described here: http://communities.intel.com/thread/30096?start=0&tstart=0
I have a flicker problem on my ud4h board too with two monitors.  If you remove all but one of your memory modules and the problem goes away, it confirms it is this issue.

YES YES YES!! I removed one memory module (from 16GB to 8GB) and the problem went away!!!

** Thank you so much waynet68!!! **

So here is the question, how do I upgrade the MRC? Is upgrading the Memory Reference Code (MRC 1.4->1.5 or higher) a hardware or software upgrade? Is this part or the regular BIOS or something separate?

I think we need to keep on asking Gigabyte to include MRC 1.5.0.0 or newer into their BIOS to get this problem fixed for the various motherboards.

Hi all members,

Special greetings to Dark Mantis and  absic

I just wanted to say that I wrote a Gigabyte.
More specifically a Global Technical Service the following below:

Hello,
I am very interested to buying the motherboard GA-Z77X-UP5 TH
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4279 # sp

However, after reading the comments on the forum http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk

I am disappointed by the problems of this product.

For example:
GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UP5 TH - 2560x1600 display issue
http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,12320.msg81531.html#msg81531

and
HD4000 random flicker
http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php?topic=11532.0

This is confirmed by these sites also:

Intel HD Graphics 4000 (i7-3770K) occasional flicker
http://communities.intel.com/thread/30096?start=0&tstart=0
http://communities.intel.com/message/171244

Is it possible that Gigabyte developed the latest BIOS with the
Another version of the MRC 1.4. Memory Reference Code - MRC

For example MRC 1.5 1.6.0 or higher for motherboards with Thunderbolt release:

GA-Z77MX TH-D3H
GA-Z77X-UP4 TH
GA-Z77X-UP5 TH

But I think it's all versions of the Z77 series should have a BIOS update - MRC 1.5 or 1.6.0 or higher.

Thank you to reassure me.

I hope to have an interesting answer for the benefit of all visitors and forum members.

Hi all members,

I receive a answer from Global Technical Service:

According to the forums those are random issue as it may vary from case to case.

If you have the board in your procession and are encountering this issue we can
assist in looking into the matter with your system configuration.

Every system setup will vary and are different that uses different hardware.
