« on: May 07, 2013, 03:59:18 am »
I just wanted to know if it's possible to run this ram at 1600 or 1866?. I'm wondering if anyone has been able to do this.

A look at Footnote 2 at the bottom of the page for AMD FX Key Architectural Features will tell you 1866MHz is supported by the use of one DIMM per channel, not two.
http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/processors/amdfx/Pages/amdfx-key-architectural-features.aspx

Crucial lists a couple DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) 32GB kits being compatible with that motherboard model.

You would need to overclock the system to achieve the 1866MHz speed. This is a link to a guide that shows how to do that.

If you want a"real" 1866Mhz  kit use one made of 2 sticks that achieve the rated speed at 1,5V.
If they need more voltage to be 1866Mhz it s most probable factory overclocked memory ,thus the chips used were not meant for such speed and the luck factor is bigger.

It runs two sticks at 1866 easily.

I just did some swapping with a friend and I got a ASUS Crosshair V Formula AM3+ AMD 990FX MB.

All I had to do was just change the speed in the bios and I up and running with 4 sticks of Kingston 1866 with no problems.

So where did Gigabyte drop the ball on this one. I have the GA-990FXA-UD5 and I can't do it with 4 sticks of memory only with 2 will work.

Unfortunately their AM3+ boards are not wonderful ,but this aspect really depends on the memory sticks used as well in my opinion.

The BIOS involved is important as well ,they are not optimizing BIOS-es for AMD boards for some reason.
Not much revenue comes out of them or something.
Had satisfaction with my 890GPA-UD3 ,but the 970A-UD3 was not what i have expected as well.

Maybe they will do them better in the future.

And the competitor product has a huge price don t forget that :)

I'm not really a big Fan of Asus board but I had a chance to try it. Yes I got it to run with the 1866, but windows did have some problems with 4 sticks.

Again it will run great with just 2 stick in it. Just like Gigabyte board. But I didn't have to jump through hoops to get it to run.

Plus I was a big AMD guy for years till I built my 1st Intel and have never really look back. Till the FX CPU's came out. The AMD computer is more of a play around with computer.

What to say ,neither Asus and neither Intel are on my favorite vendor list :)
I use Intel Gb network cards though :)
