Can i add more RAM with this combo?

Can i add more RAM with this combo?
« on: February 01, 2010, 04:05:16 am »
Hey everyone, i want to know if i can add more ram to this combo. I want to throw a few $$$ into my computer with tax money coming in soon. I already have 4GB's of Corsair Dominator DDRII 4090 MB 1066 running in slots one and two of a Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-DS4H mobo. I also run an AMD Phenom 9950 cpu. Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit is my OS.

I thought i saw somewhere where there may be a limit to how much i can run with Vista, or maybe the mobo being the limiting factor. I hope maybe someone out there has this exact combo and is running more than 4gb.

I wish it was as easy as installing 2 more similar DIMM's, but i see a note in the mobos memory support list that says:  Note: Due to AMD AM2+ CPU limitation, DDR2 1066 is only supported by 1 dimm per channel. Does that mean i can't use more than 2? Could i benefit from going to a slower speed and using 4 Dimm's, as in 8gb?

I sure would love to hear your input. Thanks, Jerry.

My input is as follows:
64 bit operating system supports 8 Gigs, but not the CPU that you have installed. Time to change the CPU! And the new CPUs are great!
Giga GA-MA790FXT-UD5P, Phenom II 945 X4, Gskill 4GB, Coolermaster, Sapphire HD4870, Velociraptor HDD, 7 fans, Antec 550+, Acer 24" LCD. "I tried Asus, then I bought a real motherboard."

What do you recommend for a CPU that can support 8GB of ram in this motherboard? I game quite a bit, also play videos and do some editing myself.

I haven't been keeping up on the newest hardware lately. Also i'm not looking to break the bank either.

Thanks, Jerry.

Having looked at your spec and checking on the Gigabyte website, I can't see a reason why you can't just add two more sticks of memory to your system. The limiting factor here is the OS not the hardware. You have to be running 64 bit XP/Vista/Windows 7 to gain the benefits of extra RAM.

Your Mobo will take up to 16 gig of RAM (4x4 gig sticks) and the CPU is not the deciding factor here. OK It is an AM2+ and, if you can afford to upgrade your CPU then I would go for one of the AM3 quad cores. Any of the Athlons or Phenom II will work OK but remember you will need the latest Bios installed and it would be better if you do this before any upgrades.

Hope this helps
