GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 SM bus controller
« on: June 03, 2013, 08:04:01 am »
Been trying to use a 16gb usb from Sandisk but my mobo won't read it. I've plugged the USB into another computer to see if the USB is faulty but it's working on other computers. I tried to see what was wrong with it in Device Manager and it appeared that the SM Bus Controller was unable to update. Any fixes?

Hi Kurado,
Welcome to forum,

What is a revion of GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3?

Because I have two revision:

GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 (rev. 1.3)
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3973#dl

GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 (rev. 1.1)
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3853#dl

how do I distinguish between the different revisions or version...
http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/faq-page.aspx?fid=864

Describe with more details your hardware, ram, psu, monitor....
and your actual version of BIOS

And of course, a version of windows , like ultimate 64bit....

Hi,
Did you install the latest Intel INF Chipset driver?
From the GigaByte page you mentioned (ver 9.3.0.1021) or from Intel directly (is newer ver 9.4.0.1017).
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=20775&ProdId=3324&lang=eng&OSVersion=%0A%09%09%09%09%09%09%09%09%0A%09%09%09%09%09%09%09&DownloadType=

Let us know if it worked.

Hi again,

Ok, if the Question mark in device manager still remains, you can try to remove the device.
And then (with the right mouse click on your computer name), scan for changed devices..
I have a Dutch version, so I don’t know the exact commands.
Now it will install the new driver.

After installing the update, it stopped popping up as SM Bus Controller and now appears a working USB Mass Storage Device but it doesn't appear in My Computer. When it does though, it changes to a Portable Device (WPD FileSystem Volume Driver) with the drive letter not working.

Hi again,

From your answer, I can’t filter the exact problem, sorry.
If the Device is trying to assigning to an existing drive letter or your Windows portable Device driver is corrupted.
I have three different solutions to try.

First the easiest solution: Go to Windows ‘Fix it’ for solving problems with USB devices.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Tips-for-solving-problems-with-USB-devices

If that doesn’t work try to assign a different drive letter.
Open the disk manager (diskmgmt.msc) find the USB and assign a different drive letter.

And If this also doesn’t help, Try to reinstall the WPD.
Open de device manager (devmgmt.msc) and remove the USB corrupted device.
And then (with the right mouse click on your computer name), scan for changed devices..
