6 GB of RAM and a GA-EX58-UD3R.

6 GB of RAM and a GA-EX58-UD3R.
« on: February 04, 2010, 09:23:03 am »
Hi,

I’m having trouble with 6 GB of RAM and a GA-EX58-UD3R.

The problem is in windows 7 64 Bit it says 6 GB is installed and only 4GB is available. It says 2GB is reserved for bios, drivers etc. I thought this was windows problem but the system refuses to start if I place just one stick of RAM in slot 1 as recommended in the manual (the one nearest the CPU) place it or any other stick in a different  slot and it starts up fine.

Intel Core i7 920
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R
Corsair HX 850W
OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 (OCZ3G1600LV6GK)
Corsair H50-1 cooler
Sapphire HD5870 VAPOR-X

Windows 7 64-Bit

I have updated the bios, I have not changed any of the settings just loaded optimized defaults.

Checked for bent pins on the socket, reseated the CPU.

reseated all the RAM

Checked all the sticks of RAM with Memtest 86 – all passed.

Checked the advanced boot settings under MSCONFIG

Reinstalled windows ….

Still the same problem.

Thanks for taking the time to read all that.

You should be using the 1/3/4 slots on the board.

|| || || ||
|| || || ||
|| || || ||
1  2  3  4

Is it not you only use the blue slot for a single stick of RAM? (I may be wrong)

The fact that in the BIOS and in Windows it recognises that there is 6GB of RAM means the RAM is being recognized. 2GB is being reserved by your OS not your hardware.

Could you screen shot exactly where it's telling you this? Because the logic goes that on a 32bit OS it can read 4GB - GPU RAM - Additional Card RAM - BIOS file = Total Usable amount

Also, download CPUZ and check what it says. IF you go to the memory tab you can have it read the slots individually to check for RAM being present.

Don't listen to what you get on this site--for the most part.  Some members try to help, but can't.  They will tell you to try what you have already tried.  I will tell you that your board is defective.  I have the same problem, as do countless others!  The first and second slot (closest to CPU) do not work, period!  I am using the last to slots (2X2 gigs).  I'm sorry to deliver such bad news.

I'm with palavering at 100%. I have same problem, memory is not detected (8GB instead of 12GB) using Mushkin 1600MHZ on shiny X58A UD7.

I will RMA the board tomorrow and keep you guys up to date to any news.

Cheers!

any update skydrone on this issue? Did you resolve it with a new mainboard?

I have the same issue.

4gb at post most of the time, sometimes 6gb at post.

Has NOTHING to do with the OS.

im running g skill trident ddr3 2000mhz ram, 3 x 2gb.

Ive tried everything, nothing helps.

memtest86 after few hours shows no errors at all.

:/

I have this board and have had no memory problems. From what I know you have to use all 3 of the same slots, ie same color. If one set doesn't work try the other. Don't try and put them all together, mix colors. That will never work. I am an experienced pc builder. It took 2 BIOS updates and some memory settings tweaks to get the system to not BSOD. it always booted and ran but occasionally when coming out of sleep it would BSOD. But all things considered, I will not be buying another Gigabyte board. I always used MSI and never had any problems with those boards. And then I bought an Abit and they go out of business...... sigh..

If the OS still says 6GB installed and only 4 available, umm could you be running a 32bit OS? not 64?

For those with memory reading issues - RESEAT YOUR CPU - The CPU socket is controlling the RAM - a bad mount can cause this. Remounting the CPU a few times usually does the trick. It's a known problem across many manufacturers.

Make sure;
- the RAM is in the matching coloured channels.
- the RAM has sufficient voltage : you may need to go into the BIOS and set this manually to 1.64/1.66v
- Memtest the sticks INDIVIDUALLY : errors will not show if you have all the sticks in and the 3rd stick isn't recognised so one at a time for 30mins each

I have a similar issue with Gigabyte  X58A-UD3R (rev.2.0 FB BIOS) +  Corsair XMS3 7-8-7-20 1600Mhz DDR3 Triple Channel Rams.

I set up my system yesterday night, it recognize only 4GB on bios but..
Identifies 6GB triple channel installed on GPUZ and 6GB installed (4GB in use) in Win 7 system.

DIMM 3_1 , 3_2, 3_5  -->  shows up 6GB dual channel all fine

1, 5, 6 -->  6GB dual channel all fine,

2, 5, 6 --> slot 2 does show the RAM but then empty slot 4 enables for it --> 4GB

1, 3, 5 --> slot 3 does show but slot 4 enables --> 4GB

3, 5, 6 --> slot 3 does show but slot 4 enables --> 4GB

Several combinations of the modules does not change anything, so i guess its not an individual module problem

Tried couple of BIOS'es , Checked for bend CPU pin but cannot see anything.

I dont think i did harm the mobo , installation was pretty neat.

tried several combinations of overclocking and overvoltaging of the rams but did not change anything.

im pretty frustrated by this issue of Gigabyte mobo.  there are many who has other versions of GB X58 boards and almost all has the similar problems.

any help is welcome.

As you have quite rightly said this is becoming a more common problem. Usually bent pins on the CPU socket are the cause and sometimes it can be cured by a BIOS update. As you have checked the pins we must accept that the problem lies elsewhere. You are also running the latest BIOS update, so no joy there either. I see you on the Tweaktown Forum earlier, I take it no help there either?

After reading almost all posts about this issue. I decided to do a spatial set up and, look up those CPU socket pins again.

This time i dismount everything and put the mobo on the table. As i take off CPU , this time i saw bend pin by naked eye by the help of room light.

Previously , i did dismount cpu when everything were in the case and look via a magnifier and a torch. that time bend pin was not visible  maybe due to strong light.

the pin bent was close to the bottom corner of the card (pci slots side), maybe  the third or fourth row from the bottom and around the middle way between left and right corners. it was extremely slightly bent, and was connecting to side pin when pressed. so i aligned it a little bit (not %100) and issue is gone.

now im able to see 6 gb trichannel on bios and win 7  and stable under overclocking.

so i recommend those ppl who have this problem and have already checked cpu socket to do it again under more omni directional light and from all angles. coz that bent pin is not so obvious even with magnifier and can be spotted much more easily by naked eye like as it reflects light differently at some angles.

thanks for replies and
good luck for all

So it was a bent pin after all then. Another one for the list! They are definitely not easy to see though and as you say you have to have good lighting. Anyway all is ok now.

Excatly, and also its interesting after setting up more than 15 different systems in last 10 years i never had seen or heard such a problem so far. it must be 1366 sockets dense design. must be more carefull about mounting cpu.
as i did searched a lot about this and majority of cases are GB users. Bent pin is not the only but one of the causes but  Should GB consider to warn socket manufacturer eh ?

anyway, being a long time gb user at least this issue led me to join tis forum at last :P thanks for immediate replies Dark
