880GM-UD2H Rev1.0 - Phenom II 955BE 2x2gb Mushkin Radioactive PC3-12800 6-8-6-24

880GM-UD2H Rev 1.0 - Phenom II 955BE - Mushkin Radioactive PC3-12800 6-8-6-24 (2x2gb)

I have the above components. I've just bought the Mushkin as an upgrade from my OCZ Platinum Low voltage PC3-12800 9-9-9-30 Kit.

The Mushkin kit is rated for 6-8-6 @ 1600mhz and runs these speeds in another board I have with the Phenom II processor (78LMT-S2) however in the 880GM-UD2H it refuses to post when the ram is set to it rated timings. I have so far tried the F5 and F8 bios and will shortly try F6 and F7 as well. ]

EDIT:

I have the ram set @ 1.65v as well and have tried upto 1.75v as well as giving the CPU-NB a little extra voltage.

This is the ram in question

Really really really REALLY not recommended not running at 1600mhz, and heres why: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2515.0.html
Nothing to see here, move along....

Let s not overreact though. :)

If the CPU is revision C3 it will run 2 sticks at 1600Mhz even if it s unofficially and it also depends on the sticks.
But the timings will be something like 9-10-9-27 and 2 T CR

I am running RIGHT NOW a P2 X4 975BE( C3) at 1600Mhz RAM speed with some Geil RAM.Few months of stability already.

So ,it really depends :)
Over & Out !

AMD FX (APU-s included) users should install - KB2645594 & KB2646060 under Windows 7

1.ASUS Sabertooth 990FX 2.0 + FX 6300 + H60
2.MSI A88X-G41 PC Mate + A8 5600K + Hyper TX 2
3.Gigabyte F2A75-D3H + A4 5300
4.ASUS AM1M-A + Athlon 5150

1600mhz has nothing to do with the issue. I happily did ran this both before and trying the Mushkin RAM

I've just gone through and flash every bios available from F2 through to f8. F6 and F7 will boot into windows @ 1600mhz 6-8-6-24 1T but SuperPi 32M errors within the first 5-30 seconds

EDIT: Oh and its a C3 revision processor, and will run with one stick happily on the F6 or F7 bios

DO NOT use 1T mate ,it will never work properly ,your operating system will get corrupted fast and BSOD-s will be in chain .

Don t go under 8 for the others also it s useless.Even if it works if you do some tests you will see performance decreases.
The Trc should also be more than 26 lower will  give you less bandwidth.

Use a 9-9-9-27-36 and move on.

LE:It s IMC limitation ,has nothing to do with the RAM itself.

LE2:One stick may run more aggressive timings ,but don t expect dual channel to do the same :)

Look at the screenshot I posted. 1626mhz 7-9-8-28 1T perfectly stable enough to complete SuperPi 32M . My current OCZ Ram had been running 9-9-9-24 1T 1600mhz for 2 years without BSODs or corrupt Operating systems

and Saying the CL tRCD and tRP will decrease bandwidth below 8 is another lie.

Heres a screenshot that shows even tighter timings are quicker running SuperPi, a very ram intensive benchmark

Edit: This ram is rated 6-8-6 nothing to do with one stick being better than the other. This is a bios issue, as illustrated by the fact one stick is fine in this motherboard... And both sticks run fine at 6-8-6 in another motherboard

If everything is running great why are you posting here ?! :)

Run one month with those settings (6-8-6-24 at 1T) ,that you say are great and come and tell us what you ve found.
Daily use is something totally different than some benchmarking.

99% of the Phenom 2 CPU-s will not run properly with 1T at 1600Mhz.If i remember correctly i ve had 5 Phenom2  CPU-s along the time and none had such a good IMC as you declare here.

Sorry, but  running 1 T at 1600Mhz with 2 sticks  ,for 2 years with a Phenom CPU ,with perfect stability it s hardly believable ,at least from me personally or maybe i had some bad luck with Kingston ,Corsair and Geil kits ,it could be.
Between the benchmarks run some games ,they will show you what is working and what is not ,CTS-s or  BSOD-s ,strange errors ,stuttering and so on

Lowering the tRC to 23 or 24 always gave me issues while playing games and in Futuremark benches i have always got less score wise.

I will stop here with the debate as the overclocking discussions should go in another section of the forum.

LE: Running the RAM at over 1333Mhz is overclocking for Phenom 2 CPU-s.You are on your own.

I wasn't trying to get into a debate about overclocking. Those speeds timings etc we're purely for benching, they we're stable enough to run SuperPi.

The point is the set of Mushkin in question is rated for 6-8-6-24 1T @ 1600mhz, It will run a complete SuperPi 32M run or Prime95 Blend test for 4 hours in my 78LMT-S2 yet is completely unstable in this 880GM-UD2H.

The previous OCZ (9-9-9 1T @ 1600mhz) ran flat out 24/7 for around 12 months running folding@home, another application that is very intensive and shows any instability very quickly. I'm guessing my IMC is pretty good as it tops out around 2940mhz NB most Phenom IIs usually have trouble somewhere between 2600-2800mhz.

Edit: think I confused things, the screenshot shows another set of ram not the mushkin I'm having issues with

"I wasn't trying to get into a debate about overclocking."

Well, that is exactly what you are doing! AMD have gone on record stating that anything above 1333 is not officially supported on the Phenom IIs. The fact that you are having mixed results shouldn't come as a surprise.

For the record, I have done several tests using Geekbench (I have a x6) with four sticks of RAM at both 1333 and 1600. The conclusion was that even with faster speeds or tightened timings, any speed increases were marginal, and that the bottleneck was the memory controller not the RAM.

As frustrating as it may be, you're not really missing out by having your RAM running at 1333. I believe even the AM3+ systems don't benefit that much from faster RAM. FM2 is a different kettle of fish altogether.
