Help ...1.98gb usable when set 1600MHZ on GA-970A-D3P
« on: December 23, 2013, 09:50:25 am »
Weird issue with my RAM... each time i set ram to 1600MHZ ( by enable XMP or just manual change DRAM setting ), windows only detect 1.98 GB usable, and when checking on CPU-Z on channel become "single".

But when Change RAM to 1333 windows will detect 4GB and on CPU-Z is "dual channel"
Please help
Already change RAM combination (Slot)  still have this issue.

Hi there,

what BIOS version are you running?

The latest version for your motherboard is F5 http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4642#bios and it addresses DRAM compatibility so if you are not running this version, try updating to it and see if that helps at all.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

As everything seems to be OK when you run your RAM at 1333 Mhz I would suspect that the memory controller is faulty and that is built into the CPU. The Phenom ii CPU's are officially, only rated to run RAM at 1333 Mhz and anything above that is seen by AMD as technically overclocking. If you haven't read the sticky at the beginning of this form here: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2515.0.html then it might be worth checking it through.

Sadly, the only way of knowing if your CPU is faulty is to test a different one or to return it to AMD for testing which sounds fine in theory but becomes really difficult in practice as you either have to access to another processor or be without your PC for a couple of weeks while the processor is tested.

Of course, there maybe nothing wrong with the CPU and it would be a good idea to contact Gigabyte Technical Support to see if there is a known BIOS issue or another reason why this is happening.

What rubbish! If so many of us are having the same problem, it is either the Motherboard and Award BIOS software or both.  I went from 4 x 2Gb sticks or G.Skill 1600 MHZ memory to 4 x 4 GB sticks of Kingston Hyper X 1866 memory and lost access to BIOS using either a USB or PS/2 keyboard.

I even had technical staff at my retailer spend some hours on it and found that the only way one could access BIOS was with 4 x 2GB of 1600Gb memory  (8Gb), and it didn't matter whether a USB or PS/2 keyboard was used, as both gave access after continuously pressing DEL.

So this MOBO has cost me a lot of time and money and I want be repeating such a purchase.

amd am3+ ram setting has been pain in the butt for some user other not from the start when it comes to ram speed

and on the Memory Support List only 4gb 1866 is the 4GB CMZ8GX3M2A1866C9

Exactly.  You need to stick with memory on the boards QVL to avoid unexpected/undesirable results.
