Z87X-OC 2nd Harddrive Problem

Z87X-OC 2nd Harddrive Problem
« on: February 12, 2014, 10:19:09 pm »
Hey guys, I'm new to the forums and pc building and OC. I recently got a PC built with the help of a friend. The PC runs fine, plays my games and such on windows 8.1. Everything is installed on a 250GB SSD. I also have a WD Caviar Black 2TB SATA III which I've attached to the z87x-OC motherboard. The 2TB does not show up when its connected. I checked the BIOS sata ports (enabled in both classic view and new view), The SSD shows up no problem, Just that 2TB is my problem. I'm really stuck for help and I haven't found anyone with the same problem.

Help?

Thanks for reading :D

If it is a new drive you have to setup. Go to Control Panel / Administrative tool / Computer Management / Storage / Disk Management.

Once in there find the drive and right click on it and just do a New Simple Volume and follow the step they ask you to do.

Tried that. It is connected physically but will no show up, I sent the hard drive back to WD and got a replacement and still nothing. It will not show up in the BIOS or computer management. I cant format it or place a partition if I  cant access it. Thats the problem. Thanks for the reply tho.

Any other ideas?
Thanks

In the bios and under Bios Features in the Hard Drive BBS Priorities is it in there? Your SSD should be the 1st to boot in Boot Option 1.

The Hard Drive should be the 1st to boot in Boot Option 2. Have you tried to move it one of the other ports?

Dumb question, but have you tried it every sata port? Including the one where you have your ssd now? At least that should works since the ssd is working with it. If even then not showing in bios then there is some incompatibility issue with the motherboard and your hard drive.

Second question, have you updated your bios?

I know this might have nothing to do with it. But try and moving the SSD to port-0 and the HHD to port-1.

I know that the drives should work in any port. But I have seen some stupid stuff happen before.

helllo.
Since this is a regular drive not an SSD one, it must have a motor. Do you hear it turn on when the computer starts? If not your hard drive maybe faulty.
Also check the cables. Use a different power cable to connect the drive and a different data cable (the small one). Elliminate all possibilities one by one. Finally if you don't come up with any answers this way, find a friend who has an external drive bay that can connect a SATA drive to a computer via USB (Search USB - Sata Converter and you will probably come up with something like that, here is a link showing what I am talking about:
http://www.startech.com/HDD/Docking/SATA-Hard-Drive-Docking-Station-eSATA-USB-3-to-SATA-HDD-Dock~SATDOCKU3E it can be a docking station or a single adapter, it doesn't matter). If you don't have a friend who has one, then I am sure a local store may help you with that.
The idea is to check the drive itself so if it doesn't work when you connect it to a PC through USB using the docking station / adapter, then the drive is bad.
When you connect it through the SATA cables to the your board, it should be present in BIOS. SATA connections are pretty straight forward, there is no way you can mix it up as it was possible with IDE cabling.
It's probably the drive, the sooner you get to that conclusion the better if you are going to return it and get a new one.
I hope this helps.
Good luck.

Im also having the same problem with a GA-Z87M-D3H board   See my experience here http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,14146.0.html

I still have not had a reply to mine thread but have worked out the HDD is not the problem.. Its the board..
Seems HDDs smaller than 2TB are ok as all of my old 1Tb are fine. I only have access to 1 x 2Tb hdd and that has the problem..

Rob.
