GA-Z77-D3H can't install without adding a video card
« on: March 24, 2014, 10:06:16 am »
Hi,

This is weird but also quite annoying. I cannot install an OS with this board when using just the onboard video. Whenever the process gets to 'Starting Windows' (for Win 7) or past GRUB (for Linux) the system shuts down. If a video card is attached then any install can proceed. The display does not even need to be attached to the video card, just that the card is present in the PCI-E slot and powered.

Here's the list of parts/software that I've tried:

Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H rev 1.0
BIOS versions - F18, F22 & 23b
Corsair CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 memory (2x2GB kit)
Antec 600W PSU
Intel Celeron G1620 w/ stock cooler
MSI R7790-2GD5/OC
Sandisk Cruzer Blade 4GB USB 2.0
Sandisk Cruzer Blade 16GB USB 2.0
Lexar Jumpdrive S23 16GB USB 3.0
Generic USB 2.0 keyboard & mouse
Seagate ST500LM000 500GB SSHD
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Xubuntu 13.10 Desktop 64-bit
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit

I've tried various combinations of hardware and software (all of which are either brand new or pulled working from a different system for testing) but it's always the same - the install fails with no additional video card installed. I've tried optimal/default BIOS settings as well as trying various options. To make it even worse, if I install an OS (with VGA card installed) and then shut down, remove VGA and restart - system will shutdown after POST.

Any advice is welcome.
