Z87X-OC issues
« on: October 14, 2014, 12:58:10 pm »
Hello, I've been having issues the past few weeks. Currently the main issues are: the system hangs on power off and the board gives me the code 66. Also my intel network adapter doesn't work properly on start up. I have to disable and enable it in the device manager to connect to the internet.

Other issues I had a few weeks back include getting stuck in an automatic repair boot loop on start up. I ended up doing a clean install from there. After that I was having issues with the computer powering off 5 or 10 seconds after switching it on.

Here is a list of my hardware:
i7 4770k
2*8Gb Corsair dominator ram at 1333
gtx 760
and the gigabyte mother board (Z87X-OC)

I'm currently running the cpu at stock speeds incase there were any overclocking issues, previously had 4.3 Ghz.

Also note that I flashed the bios to 10a with the hope it would fix my problems but it didn't seem to resolve anything :/

Any help appreciated

This might be tough to track down.  From your description/system behavior this could be any number of things.  Faulty component or hardware, defective MB, electrical fault.  The system is failing during POST, pre-boot environment when the system is performing hardware verification before hand off to the OS loader.

Ensure your PSU is not failing, I'd test with a second one if possible
Then...
Test your memory with windows memory diagnostic or memtest86
Test boot with each stick of ram individually and in different slots
Remove processor and inspect socket for bent pins
Remove and reseat, memory, add-on cards, CPU
Inspect the MB mounts and ensure nothing in the case is grounding
Reset CMOS
Pull battery and disconnect from power (wait about 5 min) reseat and reconnect to power
Replace the MB battery
Inspect capacitors for bulges
If you want to go further, you can remove the MB from the case and inspect with magnifying glass

Do you still get error code 66 if you disconnect the boot drive and attempt to start the system.  This will confirm pre-boot error.

If you were only experiencing the NIC and shut down hang, I would be inclined to say the problem was related to software, but the code66 would indicate hardware instead.  Good luck.

Cheers will try a few of these things. I have a feeling it may be the new version of bit defender that I installed a few weeks ago, although some of the problems just don't seem to make sense if it were that...

Actually I've only really been noticing th code 66 when powering off (when it hangs). It's generally ok for powering on except it takes longer than usual.

EDIT: I tried a bunch of things but in the end the dual bios switch seemed to fix my problems. Now hopefully the spare bios doesn't get messed up XD

If you can boot up on the first bios just over write. If you can't boot up on the 1st bios that is screwed up. Boot up on the 2nd bios and do the update. But just before you update the bios switch the switch back to the 1st bios and then do the update.

I did this on a Evga board that had 3 bios on it. The 1st was bad. the other two were fine. I booted up on the 2nd and just before the update I switch over the 1st and did the update. Everything was fine after that.
