P67 UD5 Drivers Disc
« on: October 21, 2014, 01:21:51 pm »
I was reworking PC this week with a clean install of W7.
As I use FSX, I have been following Nick N's FSX bible, which includes a lot of good info about specifying, building and optimizing a windows PC.
This is mainly to get the most out of FSX but its good general advice for most systems.

During the install I realized that I have lost the original driver disc that came with the board.
I had burnt another disc with up to date software from GB site and have update this disc with latest versions.

The question is should I be using the software from the disc or are the updated versions ok for a clean install?
Or in other words are the software on the site updates only or are they ok for a fresh build.

I installed anyway as there is not much choice and things seem ok but I wasn't sure if they had any code for clean install?

I always use the latest downloads available from the Gigabyte site rather than the install discs that come with the motherboard. IMHO all the install discs are good for are bird scarers, coasters, or skeets for shooting at!
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

I'm not going to tell you not to update your drivers. That is up to the person and they computer.

I have read pros & cons on drivers. If everything is running and you are not having any problem. I would only update what you need.

If you did a clean install and windows loaded some of the drivers. I myself would only do the drivers that windows didn't install.

I have been doing this for almost 30 yrs. I'm not a update person. I don't update anything unless I'm having a problem.

When I build a computer. Most of the time I run that computer for about 2 yrs. In that 2 yrs I might only update my video driver.

I just upgrade a computer for some one. Windows did most of the drivers. I install a his wireless card from the other MB.

The driver I used was right there in windows list of drivers. I had to look for it. He is playing all the games with no problem.

I have add to this that most of the people that come to any forum. When they were not having problems.

But they just updated something and now they are having problems.

Plus I use all those disc and have 100's from all the computers I built.

Like I said before I'm not telling any body not to update any thing. I'm only saying what I have done over all these years.

Personally I also think don't update unless you need to, it can make a good system turn unstable.
Its a bit annoying to be almost forced to update most programs with automatic updaters these days, particularly with Windows.

Anyways I digress.

The question was more about if the files on the website are pure updates or if they contain code for initial install.
The flip side of not updating is that later versions will have some bugs ironed out.

On the topic of using MS drivers, yes the device may appear to work but it may not be working as efficiently or may be missing some bespoke features.
I've done that in the past and especially with W7 as it has drivers for almost everything built in but having had to contest with some fussy kit in the past now I always try and use the manufacturers driver.
Handy for convenience but the system may not be running as efficient.

The only drivers you might be able to get that are newer than the one on Gigabyte's site are the audio, network & maybe the USB 3.0.

The other ones will have to come from Gigabyte itself. But the drivers on Gigabyte site are from the manufacturers.

When it comes to a board like yours. Gigabyte gets to a point that they don't keep up with the latest drivers.

The golden rules is really you don't let windows update drivers on you board & video card. That is on a newer computer.

I have seen where on older computers. Windows has the only drivers that you can't find. But it shows up on a update.
