GA-z97x-gaming 7 hangs at boot with usb3 flash drive plugged in
« on: September 26, 2015, 07:25:07 pm »
Hi all,
Just started a new build and I have been experiencing a code 64 error during boot and restarts.  I've narrowed it down to my Lexar usb 3 flash drive, when plugged in the boot process hangs on code 64 requiring a hard shutdown.  Once removed it boots no problem.  I have tried to boot with another kingston brand usb 3 flash drive and that has no problems.  As far as I'm aware code 64 has to do with the cpu so I am confused as to why a usb drive is affecting it in this manner.  I have tried various usb ports both usb2 and 3 on both the front and rear always with the same result.  This also happens when trying to wake from hibernation (with the drive plugged in) from within win8 which I have fixed by disabling hibernation mode.

Anyone know what I can do about this as this i.e. a fix or possible RMA?

The full system specs are below:

Windows 8.1 Pro

Cheers

How is the drive formatted. Is there something on there that it is telling the computer to boot from it. It really doesn't have anything to with the CPU in a way. What I'm saying is there is nothing wrong with the CPU.

It has do with the board and CPU not liking the drive. Most of the X99 board having same kind of problem. You could email or call support too.

Hi dmdilks thanks for the reply,

The drive is standard NTFS and has several portable applications on it but nothing that you could boot from. As long as its not the CPU/ mobo I guess its not really a major problem just annoying.  As this was a completely new build I was worried there was a dud component causing the issues.  I think I will drop support a line and see if they can shed some light on the situation though as its a third party piece of hardware messing things up I don't hold out much hope.

Thanks

The things is that the USB-3 ports are usually off till you get in two windows. If I have one of my USB-2 hard drives connected. It will take a long time to boot. Just sits there thinking. I have a X99 board.

I wouldn't worry about it to much. If it was every one you plugged in. Then you could have a problem. But where it is only that one you should be fine. Computers can funny beast some times.

Not worrying much any more. I did a variety of stress tests and the system is stable so I guess I just have to remove the drive before rebooting/ starting up.  Irritating as I had intended to run a live Linux distro off it and its the largest and fastest drive I own but not a deal breaker.

In any case thanks for the help.
