Yeah I do get the error when there was no RAM installed so I thought it must be the board and sent it back.  I also plan on returning my 3000 clock RAM for 2133 RAM just to be safe.

Arbog,

You are the MAN (or WOMAN)!!!!!  I've been trying for 2 days to get Win10 installed on my Gaming 7 - and always had the screen get corrupted and then WIndows could not recover and I had to reinstall.

I just lowered my Ballistix Sport (2400) to 2133 as you suggested - and it's stable as a rock!

If you're ever in Houston, I will buy you dinner.  larry678@gmail.com

BTW - I've been building and selling PCs since 1983, and coding since 1967, so you did an old guy a good turn!  You rock, Dude!

PPS.  Battlefield 3 - ClayMoreNotLess is my username.

I'd bet what happened to you is the same thing that happened to me. I've got a very similar motherboard and I kept getting the same error code 55. This is what I built:

GA-Z170X-Gaming 5 (Rev 1.0)
i5-6600k
2x8gb Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR4 2400
EVGA 1050W PSU

I was able to test those RAM modules in a server and they worked, so it was not an issue with the modules. My guess was on the 2133mhz socket and the 2400mhz modules (which are in the compatible RAM list, but anyway).

And I was right. I got another memory kit 2x4gb G.Skill RipJaws IV DDR4 2133

I specifically wanted to try with the smallest & slowest RAM to maximize compatibility, so I went for those.

I put a single 4gb G.Skill RipJaws IV DDR4 2133, and BINGO! it worked. I got into the Bios setup, Bios version was F2.

I tried 2x4gb G.Skill RipJaws IV DDR4 2133, it worked.
I changed the RAM frequency multiplier from "Auto" to "21.33" which fix the memory speed to 2133mhz, then removed the Gs.Skill modules and tried with 8gb Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR4 2400, IT WORKED! Also two of those worked together.

Went back to the bios, the bios was reading those modules as 2400mhz (and it even recognized that they had an XMP profile) but forced to run at 2133mhz by my previous configuration. Tried to switch back to auto > Code 55 AGAIN! (with the XMP profile switched off & with the XMP profile switched on).

Back to G.Skill, back to fixed 2133 speed, back to the Crucials, it worked again. So far as long as I didn't reset the CMOS, it was working.

I tried running all four modules at the same time, it worked. In order to do that, at least in "Auto" speed setting, the G.Skill 2133 had to be in DIMM1 (red), then another G.Skill 2133 in the other red socket and the two Crucial 2400 in the black sockets.

Then I updated the bios to the latest version F4. Nothing changed, all tests produced the same results as before.

Right now I'm running all four modules with a total of 24GB and they are running at 2133mhz. The only way I managed to run the Crucial 2400 modules is by forcing the bios to run the memory at 2133, either by fixing the memory speed or by putting the 2133 module in the first slot.

However, in order to get this system working, I see no way of doing it without buying 2133mhz DDR4 as I did or at least borrowing from someone else. They problem is that if you don't keep that 2133mhz ram, as soon as you clear CMOS, your system won't start anymore (because it will go back to the default "auto" speed for RAM").

I'll contact tech support to make them aware of this issue so they can release a new Bios version to fix this.

Hi.
Same problem here. GA-z170x-UD3, Crucial 2x8gb 2400mhz F4 bios PC dont start, code 55. When i mixed memory in slots with G.skill system start and working well with total 24gb memory. 16gb crucial and 8gb g.skill.
I find today on other forum beta bios f5c , and now crucial working but only in slot 1-2 (single channel). When i put in slot 1-3 for dual channel , code 55. Now i try changed ram frequency from auto to 21.33 ant seee if dual chanell works.
Sry for my english :/

Edit:  Dual chanel works with frequency 21.33, 24.00 give post 55.
single chanel works with xmp profile 2400mhz. (of course on testing beta bios f5c)

I have now tried new 2133 RAM which should 100% work with a brand new Z-170X and I still get a 55 error.  This means that it has to be the processor that is the issue as this is the only constant.

I think, there is huge bug in bios sources.

Because some memory slot works as expected overclocked clock some of them not. In my case, slot 3 did not work with 2666 mhz in the other hand when I'd set 2133 mhz (manual setting) works as expected. So we should to wait robust bios version for overclocked memory modules.

Cheers

I tested crucial memory on asrock z170 extreme4 , same problem. PC dont start in dual chanel mode (auto 2400mhz)
After changing on 2133 works fine.

I am having  problems with two of these, here is Gigabytes response to my questions, they are effectively denying that there is anything wrong with these boards even though the internet is loaded with complaints/problems.
This was my first time purchasing this brand, 4 bad boards and and complete denial of any problems on the manufacturers side, this was my first and last time purchasing this brand.

Both Gigabyte boards have been RMA and replacements have same problems, I am out over a $1000.00 because your products dont work, why dont they work? All across GOOGLE nearly everyone that bought these boards are having similar problems, others report bent or missing CPU pins, not to mention the manual that comes with the boards is of such low quality that its almost impossible to read and the pictures are nearly blacked out, your website offers no help/suggestion or anything only a beta bios 7 that is not complete only offers limited corrections.PLEASE STOP SELLING THESE UNTIL YOU FIX THEM.I almost bought the G1 models, glad I didn’t, would have been out twice as much money for boards that don’t work!   1/29/2016 1:02 PM
Answer:
Dear Customer,

We're sorry to hear that.

It turns out that we do sell quite a lot of this particular board and haven't heard about any known issue, we understand that different people have different type of system configuration, therefore sometimes is hard to just judge the board.

According to Intel the memory controller (CPU) can only go up to 2133MHz by default, therefore there's no guarantee when trying to go beyond this frequency:

Please provide the previous RMA number so we can look into it.

Thank you.

Same thing happened to me.  My system:

Core i7 6700k
GIGABYTE Z170X Gaming 7
GIGABYTE R9 390 GPU
Samsung 950 PRO M.2 SSD (256GB)
Samsung 850 PRO 2.5" SSD (512GB)
Corsair Neutron Series XT SSD (480GB)
Seagate Constellation ES.3 "Enterprise Class" 4 TB HDD
Corsair 16GB Dominator Platinum PC4 24,000 @ 3,000 MT/s RAM
Corsair Obsidian Series 650D Case with USB 3.0 cable modification
Corsair AX860i Digital PSU with Individually Sleeved Type 3, Gen 2 DC cable kit - Blue
Corsair Hydro Series H105 AIO Cooler
GIGABYTE Force K7 Keyboard
GIGABYTE 6980X Mouse
Windows 10 Pro

I will get some Dominator Platinum 2,133 modules to try on my system.  Thanks for the heads up about the problem.  HOWEVER, here's something weird.  When I put my system together for the first time, everything worked!  In fact, i was able to reboot the system multiple times with the 3,000 MT/s modules and it worked.  The only problem I was having was it didn't want to wake up from sleep mode.  Other then that, everything worked for about 2 weeks.  Then I received my Corsair DC cable kit and Dominator Platinum Light Bar Upgrade kit for the modules.  Since changing those, my system hasn't ran longer than 5 seconds.  I changed the motherboard, CPU, GPU, CPU AIO cooler and RAM!!!!  Nothing has worked, so it must be the 2,133 issue you talked about.

Alright, I finally found a fix. This at least worked for me.

This is for the DD4 2400 Crucial Ballastix Sport memory.

1.) Put both modules in slots 3 & 4 - booted at 2400hz, changed it back to 2133 so that I could boot into dual channel.
2.) Put both modules into slots 1 & 3 and booted into dual channel at 2133
3.) Went back into the BIOS and set my RAM voltage clock up to 1.266 and tried at 1.30 as well.
4.) Booted into Windows w/ dual channel XMP profile set at 2400hz without issue, no error 55.

Let me know if this works for you folks. It seems like the RAM clock and the default voltage settings on the board just didn't support out of the box for faster speeds than 2133. It's almost as if it isn't automatically setting.

I am now having this problem, just received all the parts today.

Gigabyte Z170x, Crucial Balllistix 8GB 2400, Skylake 6700K

Computer won't boot, getting error 55.

To achieve step one of your solution, you have to get into bios, right? How did you get the PC to initially boot at the default memory speed of 2400?

edit: did you put 2133 speed memory in the PC to get it to boot initially? or is it possible with just the 2400? i tried slots 3 & 4.

Hey guys, this thread is a little old but for anyone else that still has this problem, I also ran into it and when I figured out the solution I had to face palm myself.

The G7 only has one release tab on each memory slot. When I installed the memory I would put the bottom end in first then put pressure on the top half(closest to the release tab) until I heard the "click". What was happening is that the bottom end was lifting ever so slightly due to the force on the top half, enough to throw error 55 my way. Once I noticed this and pressed firmly on the bottoms of the sticks it POST'ed without a problem.

Hope this helps out anyone else with the same issue

Hi,

Just to other that might have the same trouble.

I also got error code 55 as well. - with memory on the support list:  Crucial 32 GB 4x8 2666.

After reading these posts, I tried with just one memory strip, subsequently in positions 1-2-3-4.

It started working on position 3 and 4!

I flashed bios up to latest F8d, and retried position 1 and 2
-  but with no luck, error 55 regardless combination.

To me this looks very much like a mb problem,
- but I will even try to re-fit the CPU once more
before returning the mb.

Hi. I just bought a GA-Z170X Gaming 7 (EU) and got the same error code 55 as others posters.  For me, it was the same simple problem as Tank1916 reported.  The RAM had lifted ever so slightly from the fixed end of the RAM slots when I pressed down on the release tab end of the boards. I pressed down firmly on both ends at the same time and problem solved.  I had checked the RAM twice and hadn't noticed this slight rise - was pulling my hair out until I read Tank1916's post.  Thanks.
