GA-Z170N-Gaming 5 No post No beeps.

I just built this system and it ran fine for 2 days. Had a blue screen kernel error and now the computer is stuck in a boot loop with no beeps and no post. There is also no display and no power to keyboard. The cpu fans turn on and stay on for about 10-12 seconds and then it shuts off and loops over. The ambient led light on the mobo is also on as well as the geforce led when I had the graphics card installed. I have looked for bent pins and tried another psu as well as reseating the ram and trying only 1 stick in different combinations. I had done some looking and it looks like the ram may not work at this speed but the system did run fine for a couple days. I have reset the cmos to no avail. Wanted to get some feedback before I replace the ram with 2133.

Good job troubleshooting.

Not disputing the RAM possibility, but can you describe the steps taken to reset/CLR the CMOS. Did you disconnect power, before jumping?  Have you performed a battery pull?

That's quite a bit of RAM.  You may want to consider 16GB to defer the cost of 2133.  Unless you are editing video or large photos, you will not bite into the RAM above 16GB under normal circumstances.

I did disconnect the power before jumping and I have also done a battery pull. Even left it out of the mobo overnight. The ram wont be an issue replacing. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't the cpu or mobo.

The reason for the large amount of ram is editing 8k textures and running maya photoshop and unreal 4 at once. That and large level streaming in unreal.

Hi, just wondering have you had any luck with this, as the same thing is happening to me, with same motherboard, i have tried all the things that you did and a few more, but still wont boot to bios.

We have had a lot of these boards have problems with memory over 2133. I had some problems with the 2400 memory myself. I could only get it to run 2133 mode. Plus if your memory is not XMP supported you will have a hard time getting it to run at 2400 speed.

All I can say is get some 2133 memory and give it a try. The other thing I will add to what shadowsports posted is you really not going get any boost in speed going from 2133 to 3000 or high. This is as I feel is a scam by the mother board & memory companies to get you to by faster memory.

Your memory has as base default speed that is at 2133. You are really OC the memory to 2400 or 2666 or even 3000. It is just like the CPU that you have one that runs at 3.8 and turbo boost to 4.2. This is just me it is all just fake # that make you fell wow my memory & CPU are running faster but is it really.

I wonder why I was able to install windows 10 ok, and it ran ok for a while. I have rang my supplier and explained, they think it might be the board so have said to send it back, so when I get a new board I will try it and see what happens, if it doesn't work I will try the slower ram and see.

Yea this is the ram I was using (CMK16GX4M2A2400C14R), this could be the problem, will see what the vendor says when they test the board.

vendor has got back to me and said the motherboard is working OK, i have sent the 2400mhz ram back and am looking for a more suitable 2133mhz ram, anyone got any suggestions as to what kind will suit the 170n gaming 5 with an i7 6700k best.

I would like to get something like this, but am not sure if it will run because of the speed, seems there is a common problem with ram over 2133mhz , and is a bit expensive, to be honest am not that sure what am looking for when it comes to picking the correct ram for a particular motherboard, other than the obvious ddr4/3/2/1 speed and CAS, am even more confused now because a lot of the ram listed on the QVL is 4 sticks of ram and my board is an ITX board (Z170N-gaming-5) and can only take dual ram.

Quick update, motherboard now back and have fitted 2x8gb of vengeance lpx 2133mhz and still not posting to bios, but now sometimes the psu fan will run flat out and I have to do I hard rest to turn it of, but still not posting to bios. Up until now both sets of ram haven't been on the QVL because I can't get it in dual only quad, the only difference is 1 number (xxxx4M4xxxxx, xxxx4M2xxxxx), so now have ordered more ram, vengeance lpx at 3000mhz because it's on the QVL. So it's arriving tomorrow and I will give it a try if it doesn't work It has to be the cpu, I just can't understand when I was able to get windows installed and up and running for a while before this happened.

Just tried the ram and still not booting, when switched on it now runs the fan flat out on the psu and won't turn itself off, I have to do a hard rest, if I now remove the ram there are no beeps, is it okay to run through cpu with no cooler on it for 5/10 min,  and would it be okay to power up (switch on) the motherboard without the cpu in, am starting to think it might be the cpu that's at fault, I have done all the usual things like reseting the cmos with the battery pulled

well it seems i have got to the bottom of the problem, CPU had failed (i7 6700k), thought it a bit strange that it all booted up first time and then went into bootloop, but didn't think it would have been the CPU, so i new one is on the way and hopefully i will all work this time

For your previous question about running the CPU without a cooler, no it is not OK. This will cause the CPU to shutdown almost instantly and any further power on attempts in this state can damage the CPU.

Yes you can power the motherboard without the CPU installed.
