78LMT-USB3.0 Rev 6 - won't startup
« on: March 21, 2016, 02:40:40 pm »
Hi, first time poster and I must admit, first time delving inside my PC...

I've just replaced my motherboard for a 78LMT-USB3.0 Rev 6. I'm using a Phenom II x6 1035T CPU.
Took the my old rig apart - put the new motherboard in and connected everything up. Hit the power switch - light comes on, fan starts...but nothing else. Nothing on the display.  :(

So I've taken it back to bare bones. All cables removed except - for power to the motherboard, fans, etc,  to the front panel header, and HDMI off the motherboard for the monitor. Restarted - again, blue light comes on (for the power), fans start - but nothing. Nothing displayed to give me a hint!

Any ideas please - the only things I can think of are:
- I've not got the correct positioning of the cables for the front panel header
- I've damaged the CPU (the thermal paste had glued the fan to the CPU, so by the time I got it released a few of the pins on the CPU were slightly bent - but I'm fairly certain I fixed those)
- A dodgy motherboard.

Many thanks

AMD processor and HSF (Heatsink/Fan) use thermal pads for the thermal interface not compound. To separate the heatsink from the CPU:
Gently hold and twist the HSF to break the adhesion seal caused by the thermal interface material (TIM) between the processor and HSF base.

How to remove / uninstall an AMD processor and HSF (Heatsink/Fan) unit:
http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/HowToReplaceAMDCPUnHSF.aspx

Failure to break the adhesion seal between the HSF and the processor may result in pulling the processor out of the socket, possibly resulting in processor and / or socket damage.

You might want to try a different CPU.

I would also recommend not using thermal pads. When you install a CPU use a high quality thermal compound.

Thanks for the reply. I took the CPU out and found a couple of pins had been broken. Replacement CPU currently being fitted...
