H170-HD3 DDR3 EasyTune overclock greyed out

H170-HD3 DDR3 EasyTune overclock greyed out
« on: May 03, 2016, 12:28:15 am »
Hey guys,

Firstly let me start by saying that I'm extremely new to the hardware side of computers, so forgive me if this is a really noob question/issue. I recently built my first computer and it's using a Gigabyte H170-HD3 DD3 motherboard with an i5 6500 processor. I have read that I am able to overclock it to about 4.5ghz and I was going to attempt to do this using EasyTune. I installed the Gigabyte App Center and EasyTune, but when I go into the EasyTune Smart Boost settings, I can only select the Eco or Default options, and both the OC and AutoTuning settings are greyed out, and in the Advanced CPU OC tab, the BCLK slider is greyed out. Is there a basic setting in the BIOS (I'm using version F5 for my motherboard) that I need to select/deselect, or am I just unable to overclock full stop?

Thanks for any advice you can give me :)

If you would of bought a i5 within the k series so you could overclock it as you bought a plain i5 6500 cpu it can not be overclocked that is probably the reason easy tune is greyed out.

I thought it wasn't able to be overclocked because it wasn't a K series, but I've seen and read a lot of articles like the following which suggest that you can do it, just not "officially".

Edit: It seems as though the H170-HD3 isn't capable of it, I'd need a board from the Z170 series.

Hello,

The requirements are now enforced by Intel, you need a K processor and Z series motherboard.
Intel were not happy about overclocking non-K processors, I guess due to sales :)
