Gigabyte GA-Z170X Gaming 7 - BIOS And SIV Software, Do NOT Control Fans

Hello,

Problem 1 is the Gigabyte App Control Center - System Information Viewer (SIV) - Smart Fan Advanced, does not control fans properly.
Problem 2 is the UEFI/BIOS does not properly control fan speed either.

The question is how to properly control fan speed for variable CPU load.

For system configuration details please see the end of this message.

****   Just to be clear, at this time, ALL DRIVERS, APPS and BIOS ARE THE MOST CURRENT VERSION.   **** 

Fans are configured:
A) Water Cooler pump is connected to CPU fan header.
B) Radiator fans, 120mm x 2, are connected to CPU OPT fan header with PWM 1 by 2 splitter cable.
C) Rear exhaust fan, 120 x 1, is connect to SYSTEM FAN 1 header directly.
D) Front intake fans, 120 x 2, are connected to SYSTEM FAN 2 header with PWM 1 by 2 splitter cable.


In SIV - Smart Fan Advanced:
a) The Water Cooler Pump is set to maximum speed - NO problem
b) The Radiator Fans are set to a Temperature/Speed Curve - NO problem
c) Rear exhaust fan is set to a Temperature/Speed Curve - PROBLEM
    The minimum speed is set to 40% and only spins at that speed. It does not increase under load as it should.
    It does not increase even when the CPU Temperature is at 70 deg. C and the radiator fans are correctly at max speed.
d) Front intake fans are set to a Temperature/Speed Curve - PROBLEM
    The minimum speed is set to 36% and they only spin at that speed. They do not increase under load as they should.
    They do not increase even when the CPU Temperature is at 70 deg. C and the radiator fans are correctly at max speed.


I have set BIOS to respond to Fan Speed/Temperature. This does not work either, for the system fans.

What is the problem with fan control and how to solve it?

The thing is that if the temp in the case isn't going up those fans will not speed up.

Does the controller have a temp setting? What are your system temps?

Plus what is the CPU temp at Idle? You are running a water cool. That is a little high to me 70c under load.

The CPU & the System temps are two different controllers. I might be wrong but they don't work together. If the CPU temp is going up it will not change the system temp or tell it to speed up the fans.

Have you seen the Gigabyte SIV fan control software that comes with the mobo?

1) Fan speed SHOULD be calibrated to CPU temp not the temp reported by the mobo measuring air temp in the case. That would be a terrible implementation and is not documented anywhere I can find.
2) What controller? The controller is the motherboard and the UI is either through BIOS functions or the SIV fan control software.
3) CPU running at 70C s not unusual when stress testing. It runs ~36C at idle with radiator fans at 0 RPM, lower if I set the fans to permanent full speed.

Sorry didn't get back to you but I don't use any of that kind of software. This is just me and only me. I think it is a waste of time. I did in the past but now I don't. So maybe somebody else can help with that sorry.

As long as I can't hear the fans I'm happy. I use a air cooler for my CPU and it runs at idle about 27c to 30c. I can't really help with the water cooler because I have never used one. I'm old school and I don't run any of those fancy gadgets sorry on that one too.  ;D

Use another fan controller software. I use Argus Monitor, that being the only one I have found that lets me control a retro fitted graphics cooler properly.

It reads any temperature sensor and allows control of any fan connected to the motherboard. My graphic card hits a maximum of 46 degrees running games like Blacklist on Ultra and Metro 2033. It is all in the fan control and kicking it in early enough to stop the card heating up.

My case fans are quiet anyhow on full blast so I don't need to control them and the case is so cool the system temperatures never increase enough for good temperature control anyhow.

Also wanted to add to the mix of great answers...  Based of the experience of many here...  Any time a splitter is used, fan control is lost.  Doesn't happen all the time, but we've seen this issue/complaint multiple times.

System fans are controlled by system temperature (chipset?) not CPU temp and they are working well as they should.
If your CPU is reaching temperatures above 70ºC with a water cooling system, something is wrong with your water cooling system. Speeding up your system fans won't help at all.
Open your case and make your CPU work hard.
- Put a finger on the middle of your CPU heat sink. If it's cool and your CPU is hot, the problem is that your CPU isn't transferring heat to the heat sink. Did you put a good paste between them? Does the heat sink has the right pressure over the CPU?
- If the CPU heat sink is also hot, you aren't taking heat from the CPU heat sink. Put your finger on the CPU heat sink inlet water pipe and then on the outlet water pipe. If both are hot, water isn't circulating or the radiator isn't exchanging heat to air. Is your liquid cooling system well filed with the appropriate cooling liquid?
At the radiator, in flow liquid should be at the top and outlet flow at the bottom.
Is your radiator on the back or on the top of the case?

How many pins (3 or 4) has your front and rear fans?
If they have 4 pins I can tell you how to make them follow the CPU fan. As i said, it wont help decreasing CPU temperatures, but let me know if it's that what you want.

This is easily fixed by removing the speed sensor wire (yellow) from one of the fan leads.  The the board only reads speed from one fan and applies appropriate voltage (or PWM signal if PWM fans) to both fans.  This of course only works if you have the same exact fan split.

NOTE:  Many fan cable manufacturers already remove this pin for you on one of the leads.
