GA-Z170N-WIFI boot loop, can't reach BIOS
« on: August 05, 2016, 11:47:55 am »
Hi guys,

I recently bought PC parts to build my second PC rig. Everything was fine (I was able to play some Steam and Oculus games) until I restarted my rig after installing some updates. After pushing the Power SW there was no reaction but the red mainboard light. I’ve send the mainboard (Asus Z170i pro gaming) back to the online shop and ordered a Gigabyte GA-Z170N-WIFI. Now the PC starts for like 10 secs and then turns off again, starts again, turns off again etc. I can only get out of this boot loop if I plug out the power chord. I can’t get to the BIOS, the monitor doesn’t get input signal.

I started looking on Google (since this has solved like ALL of my problems I’ve ever had with computers) and it seems like many people have this problem, so I found a thread where somebody said he ordered a different RAM (CT4G4DFS8213) to test it and it worked. This won’t work for me, I also uninstalled my HDD and Msata 2 drive (since I already have installed OS + drivers, maybe this causes the problem” but even if I only have the CPU + RAM (+ CPU & 24pin power cable) the PC still stuck in boot loop.

My specs are:

i5 6600k (stock)
GA-Z170N-WIFI
Asus RoG 1060 OC (not plugged in since I found the problem)
Crucial Ballistix Sport LT grey (DDR4-2400), 2x 8GB
Samsung SM952 SSD (M.2)
Be quiet! Pure Lower L8 CM 530w

Can anyone help me please? I really don’t know how to go on, just want to get this damn computer to work :)

I appreciate every answer here, thanks in advance!

Greetings from Germany,
Phil

Looks like your CPU isn't really starting .. did you check for bent or missing pins on your motherboard cpu socket ? Or some dirt on the cpu contacts ?

Take out the CMos battery and do a reset.
Disable Fast or ultra fast boot.

Two things concern me with this thread.  Please excuse me if I don't have all the information/history on your build.

First.  Switching out the main board without performing a fresh install of windows

Second.
Crucial Ballistix Sport LT grey (DDR4-2400), 2x 8GB
Samsung SM952 SSD (M.2)

While its possible to switch and recover, its not always smooth or graceful.    Swapping out the mainboard in this case is like going to bed in one country, and waking up in another the following day.

Your memory 2400Mhz has been problematic from some with Z170 based boards.  While strong MvME support for SM952 exists..  how you installed your OS (BIOS settings) etc on the other board might influence the ability for your new rig to boot and run out of the gate.

If you did perform a fresh install, forgive me but I wasn't able to glean that from your post.

A good first step is a battery pull, and reset (mentioned previously).  Without knowing if a fresh install was performed..  you have quite a few unknowns.  I'd look at the CPU socket (mentioned) and all connections.  Re-seat my drives, cards power connections and memory.

Might be a good idea to remove stuff and start adding components in one by one to see if the problem follows.

I have the same MB (mine is v1.0), with 2x8G Ballistix Sport  DDR4 2400.  No memory or boot issues with mine, but I'm not using an M.2 drive.  My Samsung 850 EVO SSDs are on SATA ports 2 & 3, in a UEFI RAID1 config.
Sounds serious if you can't even get to BIOS at boot.  While I was debugging a different problem with mine (RAID related boot), someone suggested using a PS2 keyboard instead of USB, but I was already using PS2.
I'm here because someone is stuck...probably me.
