GA-z170N-WIFI - memory slot not working?
« on: October 04, 2016, 09:07:03 pm »
I have just bought a GA-Z170N-WIFI motherboard, and 2x16Gb memory Kingston HyperX fury.

The problem is that when I use both memory blocks the computer reboots after about 10 sec.

I have tested the two 16Gb one at a time. One of the memory slot works, and it boot fine, but when I try the other slot it do the reboot loop. It is the same memory slot that doesn't work no matter which 16Gb memory I use.

so my conclusion is that one of the memory slot is broken.
Or are there some way that I have to do in the bios to enable both slots?

Greetings,
There isn't a "setting" in the BIOS that enables or disables a memory slot.

Start with... Is your memory on the QVL for your board?

What is the speed of the memory?
Have you tried using XMP profile setting?
Have you tried manual memory settings?

You may have problems if the memory you are running is not on the QVL or is faster than the 2133Mhz default.  What board rev and BIOS version do you have?

they are 2133 Mhz.

what do you mean by QVL??

my board is revision 1.0 and I have bios F7.

I will try XMP profile and manual memory settings, but what settings should I use?

Now I have tried XMP mode, but it didn't help.
I have no idea what manual settings I shall change, so havn't tried that.

QVL is qualified vendors list.  This is CPU, memory, SSD/M.2's tested by Gigabyte and certified for use with your board.

See your boards page:

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5518#

Then Memory Support List:

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5518#memory%20support%20list

If your memory is on this list, it should work with your board.  If not, you might need to set the voltage, timings, etc for your specific memory modules manually.

My memory is hx421c14fbk2/32

On the list they have hx421c14fbk4/16 <- this must be the 4Gb version

But if my memory isn't compatible at all, I don't understand Why they can boot up with the other slot.
I think I could be the board isn't compatible with 32Gb - has anyone testet it?
or the ram slot is broken :/

Have you check the CPU socket for bent pins. The memory controller is in the CPU.

System states support up to 32GB of memory

2 x DDR4 DIMM sockets supporting up to 32 GB of system memory (dual channel)

2 DIMM: Supports one pair of modules inserted into the same color slots as one pair of Dual-channel memory configuration. Install the modules into DDR4_1, DDR4_2 for better compatibility.

Does the system boot with one stick installed in any of the slots?

That should confirm if the slots and memory controller are functional and leave you with a compatibility issue.  The slots may only accept DIMMs up to 8GB.  But I don't know if this is the case?

Yes. its boot up only with one of the slots.

There are only two DDR4 slot in.

Ya, was thinking 4 originally, but realized just 2 when I looked at your manual.  Should support 16GB DIMMs no problem.

I want to get clarification on something.  The system will start with either stick in either slot (only one slot populated)?

If yes, the memory is not compatible with the board or the BIOS rev.

If not, you do likely have a bad memory slot.

I'm not sure what you mean.

but I have tested them this way.
I have 2x16Gb (Lets call them A and b) kingston hyperx 2133Mhz memory.

First I tested memory A in slot 1. - booted fine up.
Then memory A in slot 2. - no boot
Then memory B in slot 1. - booted up fine.
Then memory B in slot 2. - no boot

Memory A+B in slot 1+2. - no boot.

Have you check the CPU socket for bent pins. The memory controller is in the CPU.

Good advice here and worth looking into, if the CPU isn't aligned correctly with the pins / pins bent you can have issues with the memory slots.
My PC is evolving

OK you have tested the memory and both work. You know that one of the slots doesn't work. You said there is no bent pins. So there is only two things here it is the board or the CPU.

I would take it back or send it back to where you got. Have them test the board, CPU, and memory. There is no item in the bios to turn memory slots on or off.

Just to update.

I sent the motherboard back to the retailer (they sent it back to producer). They change the bad memory slot. And it works now :D
