BIOS Update Fails - GA-G270X Gaming 7 Rev 1.0
« on: February 26, 2017, 10:58:54 am »
Hey hey,

I am trying to update my BIOS for my Gigabyte GA-Z270X Gaming 7 (Rev 1.0) mobo from F3 to F4 (latest stable release) that fixes vCore Auto problems.

However, despite every avenue I have tried, it just fails to want to work. Images of the problems can be found here and below is everything I have tried and the problems they're throwing me.

Album Link on Imgur: http://imgur.com/a/IXzFA

1) Extracted files from the F4 BIOS link (Z270XG7.F4, Efiflash.exe) on Gigabyte's website to FAT32 formatted USB Drive - rebooted, entered Q-Flash and despite being able to read the file and trying both "Fast" and "Intact", both options just give me the error "Not able to update BIOS file successfully"

2) Used Rufus to create DOS Boot Drive, extracted F4 files to drive, rebooted, used boot manager to load up DOS, entered commands, it says it's completed and reboots but F/W in BIOS and through @BIOS in Windows both confirm I'm stuck on F3 so it clearly hasn't worked. I even tried HP's Utility Tool but same problem.

3) Even as a last resort (I've read it's not recommended but still), I tried using @BIOS. If I select the F4 file manually, it just throws up the error "Update BIOS Failed". If I try via Server, regardless whether I pick Taiwan, China or USA, selecting the "Intel Z270, AMI BIOS, Ver.F4" option just throws up a "FlashBios has stopped working" pop-up and then proceeds to crash.

Thank you for any help!! System stats below if it helps with diagnostics.

I'm having this same issue. Have you received an answer or solution?

Its improbable that both of you would have the same issue unless something was wrong with the existing F3 BIOS or with the F4 images available for D/L.  If you have a BIOS profile saved, delete it.  Other suggestion.  Try flashing F4l.  If successful, try F4 again.  If this fails, I'd open a ticket with support.

Ensure your bios_sw are set like the image below.

I suggest also to load default optimized bios setting before update possibly reset cmos after the update.

Agree.  Sandokan makes an excellent suggestion!

I just went through this problem trying to update from F20 to F21 on my GA-170X Gaming 5.  Not a 270X, but the solution will be the same.  I've used QFlash with the same USB drive a couple of times before on this board, without issue. I honestly have no idea what the problem is.  I just know how to sort it out, and wanted to post it for anyone else having this problem.  EFI Flash.  An oldie but a goodie.

1. Download Rufus.
2. Format as Large FAT32.  Create a bootable disk using "FreeDOS" should already be ticked.  If not, tick it.  Leave everything else as is.
3. Copy EFI Flash and the BIOS file from the bios zip to your USB drive.  Reboot
4. Press F12 for the boot menu.  Select your USB drive, and it will boot do the FreeDOS menu.  Hit enter.
5. Time to flash.  Just type efiflash [biosname.Fxx]. Example - efiflash Z170XG5.F21
6. Now just wait for the flash process to complete.  Your PC will reboot.

Keep in mind that doing this will overwrite all your settings, AND any saved profiles.  I don't recall if QFlash does this too, but I thought it was worth mentioning in case you've made extensive bios changes.  Either take photo's, or see if there's some way to transfer profiles from your current bios.  For me, I just choose the preset 'i5-6600k 4.4ghz', set the xmp profile, do a few minutes worth of simple adjustments I know in my head, and she passes prime95 at 4.4ghz, 3000mhz DDR4 mem no problem.  I mighta got lucky in the silicon lottery though.

Hope that helps.

Worked like a charm on a 170x Gaming 3 V1.0
