bios access issue

hi guys,

hitting delete does not allow me access to the bios anymore as it used to.
continuously hitting the delete key just yields a black screen.

normal booting is fine, i log in, get to my desktop fine.

there is also a longer boot time since instaling my gtx 980.

i have:

removed all usb devices apart from the keyboard & mouse.
tried different usb slots.

the keyboard functions fine when using the pc, the delete key performs fine.

i have been reading around to troubleshoot this as much as possible before coming here, and i have read the following advice:

clearing the cmos.
updating the bios.

i really should have updated/flashed the bios when i first installed the mobo, but it worked fine at the time, and i felt that if it wasn't broken, don't fix it.

What kind of keyboard are you using?

Use a PS/2 keyboard if equipped.

i don't have one.

what happens exactly to the mobo to make it so it cannot properly recognice the usb keyboards?
i only installed a new gpu or ssd, and that made to mobo not 100% recognise the usb signal during boot up?

i have been trying to read up on ps2, and it appears a lot more simple to use and more stable.

can i have a usb to ps/2 adaptor fitted to the cable of the keyboard like the one below?

Have you tried disconnect the HDD and check you can access to BIOS?

i haven't yet.

i will try this and report back what happens.
if the above makes no difference, will uninstall the gtx 980 & install my gtx 660 to see if that helps.

good & bad news.

unplugged the ssd sata cable from the mobo, booted, hitting delete, no dice.

uninstalled the 980, installed my 660...result?

almost instant boot time & access to the bios after hitting delete.

why the long boot times and non access to the bios?

the 980 performs fine when the pc is booted.

i am planning to use this 980 with another one for sli, when i build my new pc with a new mobo.

but for now, what to do?

edit:

i have read around that some people that have had similar issues have resolved it by flashing their bios.

i have not done this since installing this current mobo, so maybe this is why?

there are updates for it, so maybe it is not up to spec and it does not recognise the 980, as it is quite recent?

Older motherboards and chipsets sometimes struggle with newer GPU's.  It can be related to the MB BIOS, PCIe Gen of the CPU vs. GPU as well as the BIOS on the GPU itself. 

Start with the BIOS on the GPU, ensure there isn't a newer version available.  These are typically released to modify Fan Profiles/Curves to change the way the GPU handles heat, but sometimes compatibility fixes are also offered.

Then you can look at the BIOS on the MB.  Do your research.  Only flash either if the update absolutely addresses the issue or behavior you are experiencing.  Do not use @BIOS (windows) to flash the MB...  do it from a USB drive in the BIOS.
