3 questions about x79-ud3 plz enlighten me !!! :)
« on: April 07, 2017, 04:58:14 pm »
Ok first of all i see that my motherboard(i have it for like 2-3years now ) is rev0.4 rev 0.6 in cpuz(test app)  so first question is does this matter?? cause i see only rev 1 specs and stuff on GB site, do i need to do somthing? have i got less features?

2nd q is  i have an i7 4820k cpu on it, should i update bios from f17 to newer version?? (i have no probs ussing this version)

3rd and last question is i want to buy more + faster ram but can i do it? ... i have 8gb 1333mhz dual channel and wanted to go 16 gb 1866 dual ,but when i went into kingstones (i want fury white ram module  ) site to see available kits for my motherboard it alowes me to buy 1 module of 8 gb or kit 2x4 gb but didnt alow me to choose kit of 2x8 gb or even 4x4gb kit (kingstone makes kits 2x8gb fury white model)  now the  x79-ud3 supports up to 32 gb so this raised questions about what my motherboard realy supports concerning ram  this is the link to kingstones site
http://www.kingston.com/us/memory/search?DeviceType=7&Mfr=GIG&Line=GA-X79-UD3&Model=75231
 thnx in advance!!!!!!

Q1.  The revision denotes the hardware configuration at the time of manufacture.  Having an earlier or later revision doesn't mean something is wrong or you are missing features.  Manufacturers purchase components in bulk.  Then build thousands of boards.  If they need to build more and the same components cannot be sourced, a new MB revision is created.  This way a manufacturer can keep track of the components that the board was assembled with.  Board revisions can also be made to correct issues, but this is less common.

Q2.  Do not upgrade for the sake of having the latest BIOS.  If what you have is working, stick with it.

Q3.  Purchase RAM that is on the QVL for your board.  This helps to ensure compatibility.

Rev 1.0 http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_x79-series.pdf
Rev 1.1  http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_x79-series.pdf

I think they are the same, but use the one for your board's rev as reference. Sadly these are old and outdated.

X79 chipsets are finicky when it comes to RAM.  Your CPU supports DDR3 1333/1600/1866, but sometimes the BIOS can have issues with higher density RAM modules.  The RAM you have chosen might need to be configured manually if XMP profiles do not work.  DDR3-1866 CL10-11-10 @1.5V

Thnx for the rply it was helpfull but doesnt make me understand why or if i can or cannot put 2x8gb 1866mhz 1.5v kingston fury that i want to ... i mean i know i have to configure the hz from bios to be at 1866 but can i put 2x8gb dual on this motherboard at 1688??? if not can i use 4x4gb kit of the same brand/model ?   cause from what ive searched those are the best ram -price/performance/quality ratios for my pocket ..... the links you posted are saying above that they are for reference and dont provide any help (also they are not the same revision as my motherboard so..... plz if you or someone can be more specific it would be great

What rev board do you have?

I only see 1.0 and 1.1 on the US site.   http://www.gigabyte.us/Motherboard/GA-X79-UD3-rev-10#ov

Other countries do get other revs..  but you didn't say which you have?

Let me clarify.  The PDF docs I referenced above were created years ago when the board was released.  It hasn't been updated since that time.  There is no updated information available.  Not every DD3_1866Mhz speed memory will work with your board.  Since you are wanting to use RAM that was made long after the board was manufactured, no compatibility testing was performed or confirmed.  Go ahead and try the RAM, but we cannot confirm it will work based on the limited information available.  The Kingston site says it will work, but its hard to know for certain if it was actually tested.  Hope that makes sense.
