Another GA-X58A-UD5 (rev 1.0) just won't allow 1600Mhz Triple RAM thread!

Hey guys...I've searched this forum and other places and I'm having no joy.

I have one main thing bugging me about my GA-X58A-UD5 (F5) and that's the 12GB of Corsair XMS RAM (CM3X2G1600C9) just won't run at 1600Mhz.

The XMP profile is a no goer from the off. It just falls back to the BIOS crying. But even when I manually change the BCLK, Multiplier etc etc it just won't run. 1333Mhz is no probs but I want 1600Mhz ;)

Also upping the voltage to the usual 1.65v does nothing as the board overrides me and keeps it at 1.5v!! Dunno why ??? Only the XMP goes to 1.65V but it's useless as it fails to boot beyond bios.

Not the end of the world but has anyone got theirs running 1600Mhz without problems?

I do a lot of rendering so the little extra really does help.

ps. All sticks run sweet on their own or in different groups and there is no RAM hardware issue as far as I can tell.

Is this a known X58A-UD5 problem or a known Corsair XMS problem?

pps. My 12G of dominators run sweet in my classified and xms are supposed to be doms without the heatsinks...so they say.

I am running the same memory(Corsair Dominator 1600Mhz but TR3X3G1600C8D) on my UD7 board with no problems whatsoever. The BIOS just accepts the XMP profile and away they go. Do you have the option of a BIOS update? What if you just fill three slots? Do they run at full speed then?

Hi there, thanks for your response.

Yeh sorry...I forgot to detail the different configs. They run at 1600Mhz if I only install 6G in any config. I can't edit the OP but these are HX3X12G1600C9 which are the stated CX ram but just a matched 12G set.

It's weird because if the XMP doesn't work that shouldn't matter as I should be able to manually up the voltage. But it keeps me at 1.5v.

These aren't dominators...but are supposed to be the same. However...my real Dominators (like yours) run as a 12G set in the classified without problems and without an xmp profile.

I should try these in the classified but it's a little chew-on as I'm super happy with the Classifieds performance and I'd hate to mess it :)

Can the gigabyte not handle 12G or is there a way to force the board to run at 1.6v? Like I say...every time I change it it just ignores me lol

Can you try the Dominators in your Gigabyte board, all 12Gb. That at least would rule out any problems with the ram etc. It is strange that you can't manually set the voltage to 1.65v. Maybe it would be worth clearing the cmos and then try again in the bios.

Well that seemed like a good idea so I did it :)

I put the Dominators in the Gigabyte and they loaded up with a xmp profile no problem!

But as they were out of the Classified and I was already half way there...I put the XMS3s in that (all 12GB) and they ran fine with an xmp profile and also without (using my dom settings on said classified). All at 1600Mhz.

So these Corsair XMS3s just won't run 12gb @ 1600Mhz in the gigabyte board but they're fine in the Classified.

Resetting never did any good and I'd tried that plenty anywho :)

The XMS3s got a little further on the Gigabyte when I changed the timings and also went to standard mode. But I kept getting the BSOD and I was just back doing the same things that led me here ;)

On a side note: I could compare both ram at the same time and those who say the XMS is just Dominators without the heatsink must be wrong as the Dominators are on thicker PCB for sure.

Anyway...I wonder why the Gigabyte won't play 12gb @ 1600Mhz with these Corsair XMS3s when it's fine with the Dominators ???

It's certainly not the first time that a motherboard won't play nicely with a certain ram module even though it should. At least you are nearer getting it sorted now that you know. As you said the Dominators are a better quality ram than the xms3.

Thanks...but I'm no nearer at all. hehe Previously I just knew it didn't work in the board.

All I know extra now is the Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 won't allow XMS3 Ram to run at 1600Mhz if there's 12gb when other boards do. Just tested ram on my mates Rampage and it works on that too. lol

Classified - Tick
Rampage - Tick
GA-X58A-UD5 - UGH! ;)

So the RAM is perfectly fine. It's the board that's not (with 12gb of this RAM @ 1600Mhz even though 6gb at the same speed works  ???). Looks like there won't be any BIOS updates either if the Rev.2.0 is out. Or maybe there will?

Oh well...ebay it is for the board. Should get an ok price for it. Shame as I like a lot about it.

Anywho...thanks for your help dude. You helped me by suggesting I check the other machines with the RAM  :D

Just thought...although it pains me to do it...I could always swap the RAM across machines. Doms in Gigabyte and XMS in Classified.

Save me selling anything ;)

Yes, I did think that but you didn't seem to be happy to do so. It would be the best solution I reckon. :)

Yeh...bit of a 'Durgh!' moment.  8)

It doesn't solve the question on why but neither PC cares which one has the Doms so this way I now have 2 x 1600Mhz 12G machines.

Everything running smoothly so that's enough for me :D

Final update.

I put everything back as my GA-X58A-UD5 just cannot run RAM at 1600Mhz stable. Weird as it's one of the popular speeds but after a bit the Dominators even started to crash. They couldn't handle any of the stress tests in the GA-X58A-UD5.

XMS3s are back in at 1333Mhz and the Doms happily back in the Classified.

Both RAM worked perfectly in the Classified and Rampage. Just not the GA-X58A-UD5 which doesn't run stable 1600Mhz.

Pretty poor board I'm finding.

I think it is time to RMA the board now after the tests we have run and it is still not running the ram at the right speed stably.

I thought that too (even though the RMA process is always painful) but the reason I reckon it's a waste of time is...

Quote
Support for DDR3 2200/1333/1066/800 MHz memory modules

Gigabyte have never said it supports 1600Mhz so there would be no justification for doing so.

A lot of manufacturers avoid saying 1600Mhz ram on their products. Dunno why as it's very popular. But clearly it causes issues which is why they don't say it will work. Kind of a get-out-clause :)

Hi,

I don't think RMA'ing the board should be an issue as 1600 Mhz RAM is supported, just look at the Memory Support List. http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3304&dl=1#dl it clearly shows 1600 mhz memory.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.
