GA-785GM-US2H No HDMI without VGA Connected, Why?
« on: June 12, 2010, 06:02:46 am »
My GA-785GM-US2H v1.0 was working great for months then about 2 months ago the display started to go blank a few seconds after Win7 Media Center loaded.  Closing Media Center blindly w/Alt-F4 would bring the video back...at first.  Then the display would blank out when at the Windows desktop.  It isn't a driver issue as the problem happens in the BIOS setup as well.  Only HDMI connected, the screen goes black in a few seconds in BIOS setup.

The wierd thing is that if I have a monitor connected to the VGA port HDMI works once Windows boots.  The splash screen and BIOS will only show up on the VGA LCD but once Windows boots HDMI kicks in.  The problem first happened using the F2 BIOS.  I updated today to F11 and at first I thought the problem was fixed.  After flashing, the splash screen and BIOS setup showed up over HDMI but after a few minutes it blanked out again and is back to only showing on the VGA connected LCD.  HDMI continues to work in Windows if the VGA LCD is connected.  It doesn't have to be enabled in Windows or turned on, just the presence of the monitor gets it to work.

I've tested on two TV's and with multiple HDMI cables.  I'm thinking it's a hardware issue with the motherboard but thought I'd post here first to see if anyone else has experienced this.  I searched but did not find a similar forum post.  No overclocking, used Load Optimized Setting in BIOS, AMD Athlon X2 240, 2GB RAM.  Also tested with two sets of RAM.

Thoughts?

I haven't come across this situation before but would have to agree after your checking everything out that it sounds like a hardware problem on the motherboard. Maybe it's time to RMA the board.

This reminds me of a dual screen bug I saw on a laptop
struggled to get the Laptops LCD and a Projector to display at the same time

didnt appear to be affected by resolution or changing cables etc.

I know it sounds basic, but have you played around with the detect displays function and selecting primary/secondary displays in vga config?

bofh1971,

The issue occurs outside of Windows too. In the BIOS setup, BIOS POST screens, and in Windows Setup too.  I wish it was just a fight with Windows or drivers but this appears to be something more.  I've submitted a support ticket to MSI so I'll see what they say.

Here's a link for the Mobo: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3447#ov

Sorry I don't use HDMI on my PC and haven't played with it enough to offer a solution but hope the link to the motherboard helps.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Just from info that I have picked up from various places on the web it seems like this chip may be prone to problems like this. I am sorry that I can't be of more help.
