X58AUD3R not booting - Newbie needs help

Hi,

I am using X58AUD3R with i7-930, H50 cooler, Corsair 6 GB memory (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145236), Corsair 550VX powersupply (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139004), PNY GTX 260 graphics card and 2 1TB HDD. When I switch on the system, all of the phase LEDs light up, first 4 of the 7 NB phase/DDR Phase/DDR voltage LEDs light up. No other LED comes to life. The Casing fan at the front rotates and lights up, the H50 fan installed at the back rotates, the power supply fan rotates, the casing front power indicators lights up. It stays for about 4-5 seconds before losing all power completely.

The freqeuncy and CPU voltage LEDs do not light up at all. Can anyone point me to the right direction as to what I am doing wrong. I tested with single memory modules and all of them gave identical results.

Check you have the EATX (extra 12v cable)power cable installed.

Check also your CPU H50 cooler screws fixation, if not screwed well, cpu could overheat and switch off your system.

Also make sure that your H50 is set to expel air out of the rear not into the case.

Thanks for the replies. The 12V supply is plugged in. It should at least boot even if H50 is not most efficiently installed or am I missing something. H50 fan is taking air out of case.

Any way to test if the processor is getting power? Does any of the mobo LEDs indicate what is happening with the processor?

Not sure, cpu t° reach high limit very fast if heatsink can't evacuate cpu heating because of bad physical contact.

You didn't forget the heatsink paste when installing the CPU cooler did you?

These were my tests today:

1) Checked for bent pin - not that I noticed
2) Removed H50, wiped the paste clean and put in stock cooler, tried booting from case
3) Put in a mobo speaker, it is making a faint sound during the brief period but I am pretty sure it is not a beep, I have heard POST beep earlier.
4) Put some indicator LEDs in front header they seem fine for the brief time this thing is on
5) Tried taking off the battery for 30 mins and clearing the CMOS
6) Took the mobo out of case, put it on the cardboard mobo box (in which it shipped) and connected only two connectors 24 pin and 8 pin, processor with stock fan, 1 stick of RAM in white slot nearest to the processor, GFX card and two power supply connector to the graphics card. Removed all fan, SATA, USB connections.
7) Bought a PSU tester, plugged in 24 pin and 8 pin supplies. The voltages are within range but slightly lower than the exact middle value. (I can post those value tomorrow)

After all of these it still has the same problem. At this point, only three things can happen - dud mobo, dud processor, inadequate PSU. I am giving benefit of doubt to the processor and planning to exchange the mobo and RMA the 550 W for something like 650W.

Do you think that i a good idea?

One other point is that the NB/SB voltage LEDs never light up during the process nor does CPU voltage LED. Does it indicate something?

I would still doubt the PSU and for future proofing I would go for something of at least 750 w and a good make. This should last you for some time without any worries and be good for any upgrades you might want to do.
It is possible that processor is faulty, it does happen athough not that often.

- HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH24NS50
- Sapphire ATI Radeon NE 4890

All this supplied with PS Enermax MODU87+ 600W

and PS is large enough, never got any power problem.

I would agree with you. Your PSU is big enough for what you are running at the moment with some to spare but if you deciced to put in crossfired 5870s or something similar you might start running into trouble. A bit of futurteproofing never hurts and you also have to take into consideration the drop off of the capacitors as they age.

Yeap Dark Mantis you're right.

I didn't want to calculate the best PS, my intention was only to show n__c that except a faulty PS, his problem IMHO wasn't tied to a lack of power.

In principle I am sure we are both agreed. It's just that if he is going to change it I would rather see him purchase something that would hopefully last a few years. The PSU he has now is a good one build wise.

I had the same motherboard and cooler, I had to reinstall the H50 because the fan wasn't spinning for some reason. I re-plugged the corsair fan in and it was fine afterwards.

Yes, well that would have definitely given you an overheat situation in no time.
