E8400 multiplier stuck at 6
« on: July 09, 2010, 05:16:19 pm »
I have a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P R1.0 mobo and E8400 CPU.  The default multiplier is 9 to give a 3ghz cpu, but the multiplier stays at 6 and doesn't go up to 9 even when running applications for 100% cpu usage.  It used to fluctuate between 2 to 3ghz like it's supposed to (due to DES?).  In the BIOS I can set the multiplier to 9 and save and exit, but when I restart the next time the multiplier goes back to 6.   I recently installed and uninstalled EasyTune 6, so that might be the problem.  When I tried to overclock with EasyTune, the multiplier still stays at 6.  I've also disabed Dynamic Energy Saver in the Bios.

Not much help I'm afraid but you are no doubt right when you said it was probably down to Easy Tune 6. I tried playing around with it when I first built the computer and had no end of minor problems.

I discovered another post with a similar problem and disabling TM2 allowed me to change my multiplier without it reverting.  The weird thing is that I've always used the "optimized defaults", which has TM2 enabled, with no problems.  I wonder why I now have to disable TM2?  Did EasyTune6 screw something up?  Shouldn't EasyTune be named VeryHardTune?

I'm sure you're right. I found all it did was give me grief and so I just uninstalled it. I don't even really know why I put it on in hte first place as I always do things the long way, I guess it was just there and looked easy.
