Five Long Beeps

Five Long Beeps
« on: December 20, 2017, 05:50:44 pm »
I sometimes hear 5 long beeps when starting my machine. It boots fine, and I do not hear the beeps every time it seems.

I have read that 5 long beeps refers to issue with the RAM stick location.

However, I have only one stick of RAM.

Which socket should I use with only one stick?

Z370 AORUS Gaming 7 (rev. 1.0) with Core i5-8400

Cheers! :)

Greetings,
While the system can run with one stick of RAM, it is designed to run with two sticks minimum Dual Channel Mode.

5 beeps does indicate a problem with memory.  It can indicate a fault or failure to detect properly.  This might be what is happening in your case.  If the memory is not listed on th QVL for your board, that too could cause behavior that might trigger error or beep codes.

You are really doing yourself a disservice by not running the board in dual channel configuration. Consider getting a matched set of RAM for the board.  Follow the recommendations on the QVL support list to obtain the best result.  Important, since you do not have a "K" series unlocked processor, do not buy faster RAM than the default speed for the board. 2133/2400/2666 Mhz.  FYI - i5-8400 is spec'ed for 2666 Mhz
