Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3, P55 - Problem with RAM
« on: July 15, 2010, 09:52:18 pm »
Hello to everyone!
im trying to solve a very confusing problem. And hope your fantastic brains can help me!

I built a new computer and its working as it should except for one problem.
When i right click on "Computer" and use properties you will see standard information on your computer.
As i check my RAM something is wrong.
It says: Installed memory 4GB (2GB useable)
In total i have 4gb installed and it should be 4 aswell. I never seen such thing before. And ive googled around alot to find answers, and most of it all points to memory remapping but i havent found anything on my bios for such alternativ.
Now i wanna hear your guys theori!

My motherboard is: Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3, P55, Socket-1156
and my RAM:    Corsair Dominator DHX+ DDR3 1600MHz 4GB (2x2gb)
CPU: Intel Core i5 Quad Processor i5-750

I take it that you have 32 bit version of the operating system installed in which case you will be limited to about 3.5Gb tops and if you have onboard graphics etc it will eat into it also.

There have been several cases of this recently on this forum. I am not sure offhand whether they all involved this motherboard so I sugggest that you do a search and see what you come up with.
The first advice I would give is to check that the memory modules you have installed are on the QVL of either this company for your board or the memory manufacturer's website QVL for this board. If they are then I would recommend trying to run memtest86 on the modules one at a time for at least about five loops each.

I dont know what QVL stands for, so its of no help to me.
Tho when i order, i ordered 8gb of memory,  (4 x2gb) and ive tried each of them in diffrent slots to see if its any diffrence, i had Memtest 86 running for along time and no errors.
As i said earlier when i googled around i saw a few people with this problem, and as i understand it has to do with the memeory remapping inside bios. hence im asking of anyone have the same problem as me.

Windows can feel that i have 4gb of RAM but for some reason it has reserved 2gb of RAM to bios, driver etc etc i can see that when i push ctrl+alt+delete.
So what i understand im screwed if my bios doesnt have memory remapping in it. :(

QVL stands for Qualified Vendors List and is a list of memory that has been tested with the motherboard in question to certify that it is compatible and guarranteed to work properly. Sometimes it is called other things but it is always quite understandable what it is. Both the memory manufacturers and motherboard makers have these on their websites. That way you can be sure that your memory will work before purchasing it.

I don't think that your motherboard has the Memory Remapping option in the BIOS but I will check for you.

I have just checked throught he documentation for the BIOS and this feature doesn't seem to exist. The only thing I can suggest is to contact Gigabyte Technical Support and telll them the problem and maybe they can arrange for it to be written into the BIOS code.

well thank you so very much for the help, i guess im on to switching motherboards, its a huge disapointment tho. I know those who had problem with asus etc (same as me) they could just turn on memory remaping to solve problem :(

Yes I know that Memory Remapping was a BIOS option on the ASUS motherboards as I remember seeing it on my last board.
