about ram upgrade

Hello everyone, i have long time to use the forum and also not so good with the latest technology so im here to get some help from you guys.

I have an old system that still "rocks" for me and its quite fast still with ssd etc.

well i have gigabyte ud3r x58a motherboard rev 2, and i have installed for years now ddr3 triple channel 1600 mhz 12 gb of ram and i run on XMP, i have 3 + 3 different ram sticks 3x kingston and 3x gskill cuz i couldnt find anymore back then the same exact but they work perflectly fine even on xmp or when i put them manual even if i oc them a bit.

my question now is, how i can put more ram in my pc because there are no more triple channel kits in the market , if i remove all my ram and buy ddr3 quad channel 1,5/1,6 volt and 1600-2200mhz that my motherboard supports and just not use the one ram stick it will work normaly or am i completely wrong?

p.s i have a big heatsink but doesnt matter il change to watercooling so any ram can fit so any tips would be awesome thank you all.

I won't tell you not to try, but you are going to be gambling.  12 yr old technology. 

I personally wouldn't bother.  Admittedly, I am not not in support of spending money on old tech.  If often ends with you have even more older tech with little to no ROI.   

If you have a source for cheap ram, go for it.

I appreciate your answer and i understand, but this is for second computer my new one will be extreme, but i would really love to answer my question if quad ddr3 rams can play in triple channel mobo, that means im not gonna use the one ram stick but only the 3.

The thing is that you don't need triple data memory. All Memory is single channel memory. When they make memory kits they just match them up.

If you can find somebody selling 4gb sticks of the same brand of 1600/1333/1066. Buy them as long as they all the same specs you will be fine.

I have been doing this 40+ yrs. Back in the days when you bought memory. We didn't worry about all the rules they have today on memory.

Plus other thing I just have to laugh when somebody says I'm going to buy some 3600 speed memory. Why because all memory has a base clock today on DDR4 2133. The DDR3 has a base clock of 1066 too.

There really is no performance difference between 2133 and 3600. Believe this or not the 3600 really runs slower than the 2133. So on yours it will be the same 1600 vs 1333 or 1066. Really is no performance difference.

So what I'm saying is if you find somebody that has 6 4gb sticks of 1333 or 1066 buy them. That is if you can't find 1600. Plus on the XMP setting when you set that the motherboard is really OC your memory.

You board will run 1333, 1066, & 800 with out the XMP. It will set the speed of what memory up to 1333. Any thing over that you have to set the XMP. To get it to run like 1600 or the 2200.

On my backup/work computer. I have some Mushkin Blackline 16gb Pc4-17000 12-12-12-35.

On a Gigabyte Z490 Vision G motherboard. With a i5-10600K 4.10ghz.

Plus I had some of these Mushkin Blackline Pc3-1600 7-7-7-20
