Hi I have a problem after reading some of your posts about ram, my setup is :-

NZXT Lexa S
Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P (rev 1.0) mobo
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition, Deneb Core, S AM3, 3.4GHz 
4gb ddr2 6400 800mhz ram
XFX HD 4870 X2, PCI-E 2.0, 3600MHz GDDR5, GPU
Seagate Baracuda 500gb,  32mb cache
Corsair 750 PSU
Zalman 9500
Cd Writer
DVD Writer
24" Samsung SM2433BW Black Widescreen LCD, 1920x1200
5.1 Surround speakers
Logitech G11 Gaming Keyboard
Logitech MX518 Gaming Mouse
Windows Vista Home Premium

I want to go to DDR3 so i am buying a Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H, AMD 890GX, S AM3, PCI-E 2.0, DDR3 1866(OC), USB 3.0, SATA 6Gb/s, SATA RAID

the choices of ram i was looking at were



G-Skill 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 Ripjaw Memory Kit CL7(7-8-7-24) 1.65V.
4GB (2x2GB) Corsair XMS3 Classic DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 7-8-7-20, 1.65V.

I have read about there being a problem between Skill ram and the processor i have how about the Corsair any probs there.

Hi there,

You are quite right to be careful about choosing the correct RAM for your new system. The advantages of going to1600 Mhz RAM are not really that great and if you are looking for stability, as well as speed, I would suggest you go for 1333 Mhz RAM instead.

Whichever memory you go for, it is worth double checking to see if it is on the QVL for your choice of motherboard.

Went and looked at the qvl for rev 2.1 which i think would be what u would get now if you are buying new and as an answer to your question NEITHER are supported by that board.

Hi absic115 and autochech, thanks for the info i had my mind set on the corsair but i am open for advice  does that mean that even if  i go for the 1333 it might not run on the mobo because they are not supported any advice as to what ram you mights sugest.

I had corsair running at 1600;CPU over clocked. stick failed. Changed 3 times. Dumped Corsair. Switched to Gskill 1600,2GB x 4. mem voltage set to 0.025. No problems. CPU running at 3525, the chip runs hot at 68 C idling,though.
Memory set at 1600.
No crash with COD MW2,

The truth is, you can have problems even if the memory is on the QVL but if you get memory form the QVL then you have some recourse to Gigabyte.

is the one i looked at originaly before i was advised to go for the 1600mhz so i think i will just stick with it, can i up the amount  in future by two gigs or do i have to stick to 4gb at a time.

I've used this memory in various combinations and it has never caused me a problem and you can add 2 or 4 Gig later depending on your budget.

The thing to bear in mind is that it is always better to buy memory as a matched set (2x1Gig or 2X2Gig) rather than individual sticks.

Yes I also run two of these drives and am particularly pleased with them. I have mine in a RAID0 configuration(but noot on the SATA3 ports )

Thanks both for the vote of confidence in the hard drive, I am hoping to send to scan at the begining of August for the items and then start the build, I also have an Artic Cooler for the XFX 4870x2 i own so i have that to do also so I have a busy and exciting time coming up.  Thanks again for all the help and advice.
